Description

A piece from The Chronicle's 1979 series "The Roots of Black Winston Salem" focusing on William Samel Scales, a local entrepreneur and businessman. Scales began was a tobacco worker but quickly opened many successful businesses in Winston Salem, including the first black-owned bonding agency and two theatres. Scales was also the president of Forsyth Savings and Trust.
