Anderson and Marcus Carpenter relocated from Gaston County in anticipation of business opportunities associated with the railroad. They opened a general store in downtown Kings Mountain in 1874. The Carpenter brothers also opened a brickyard, which supplied bricks for one of the town's first brick retail buildings.
