Description

This scrapbook belonged to Bascom Lamar Lunsford, noted twentieth-century collector and promoter of traditional Southern Appalachian music and dance. Compiled by daughters Kern Lunsford, Merton Brown, and Jo Herron, the scrapbook includes Mr. Lunsford's comments on items that document his family history, as well as the musicians and dancers he encountered and places he visited during his long life and career. Bascom Lamar Lunsford began the first folk festival in the United States in 1928 in Asheville, North Carolina and went on to establish folks festivals in other parts of North Carolina and in other states. In 1934 he assisted Sarah Gertrude Knott with the first National Folk Festival. He recorded his "Memory Collection" of 315 songs, stories and fiddle tunes for Columbia University in 1935 and repeated this feat of memory with 317 items for the Library of Congress in 1949.
