Another post-war period began. In Vance County it was much the same as elsewhere. Our men who survived soon returned from the various branches of service; readjusted themselves to civilian life; and became engaged in peaceful occupations. Many new homes were built, and many new businesses were ‘opened. In general, manners and morals in our locality did not differ from those before the war.

Vance County’s radio station, WHNC, came on the air August 6, 1945. This station is owned by the Henderson Radio Corporation which filed its charter authorizing a capital stock of $100,000 on April

4, 1944. This corporation was organized by S. S. Stevenson, President;

T. W. McCracken, Vice President; Nathan Frank, Vice President and General Manager, W. J. Alston, Secretary and Treasurer; Elizabeth G. Bradley and J. Gilliam Burleson. Many of these incorporators stand among the business leaders of the county and have substantial as well as diverse business interests.

The local station is an affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System, and a member of the Associated Press. The personnel employed by the station are of the highest caliber. Among its other features, WHNC has on hand the largest music library of any station in the South. Having the finest equipment available, and a power output of 10,000 watts, WHNC is able to serve both north-central North Carolina and south-central Virginia on F. M. as well as A. M. fre- quencies. Subject to the approval of the Federal Communications Commission, the Henderson Radio Corporation plans to construct a television studio on the Norlina Highway about one mile north of Henderson.

WHNC over its five-year period of operations has accrued over 200 merits for public service, which is a remarkable achievement in this field. These merits have been awarded by such organizations as the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard; also, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, local civic clubs, and state and national charitable organizations.

With the installation of WHNC, the people of Vance County are fortunate in having an additional source of entertainment and another medium for the accurate dissemination of public information.

Among the important enterprises organized in the county during the post war years is the Greystone Concrete Block Company. This new industry was founded by Jack Cannady, N. E. Hedrick, and A. D. Capehart. The company, although it went into operation on January 1, 1946, was not incorporated until 1948 when its name was changed
