for 1939, it marked the first time in ~ grid history that a Southern Confer- * ence player had been placed or the

mythical team during his Junior

year. That is quite an honor for the young

fellow from Natrona, Pa., who has

helped make football history at the

~ Tar Heel institution during the past two years. Quiet and soft-spoken on

the campus, Paul is very much the

~ opposite on the football field. He's always in there, fighting with all he’s

got; and he never gives up, no matter how great the odds are. : A good illustration of his fighting

spirit was shown in the Tulane contest played in New Orleans this fall. The

Tar Heels were behind, 14 to 0, with the minutes fast ticking away 1n the fourth and final quarter. He raced

down the field and jumped high in the air to take a long pass from Jim

Lalanne, pulled away from the grasp- a would-be tackler, stumbled a few steps, and then, pick- ing up speed, dashed twenty-five yards for the Tar Heels’ first six points. No

one was near him as he passed the

final white stripe. ’ A few plays later, after an op-

~ ponent’s fumble had been recovered in

enemy territory, Paul raced down to

the goal-line for another pass, again leaped high into the air to take the

ball out of the grasping fingers of an

opponent, and pushed his way across for the touchdown that helped the Tar Heels gain a tie with the powerful

Green Wave. Thésfollowing week against Penn-

~ sylvania, with the score 6 to 0 against ~ the Carolinians, he made two sensa- tional catches of long passes to put the ‘Tar Heels ahead, 13 to 6. This started

the fireworks for the Wolfmen, as they continued on to an unexpected 30-to-6

He is not only the fourth North Carolina player to be placed on All- American elevens, but is the second flankman from the Tar Heel school to take that honor in the past three years. Andy Bershak was placed on seven different mythical teams, in- cluding that selected by Grantland Rice, in 1937. George Barclay was All-American guard in 1934, while Steve Maronic was placed on several selections last fall.

Has Had a Long Career

Paul did not blossom into a brilliant player just “overnight.” He was out- standing on the freshman squad two years ago, and gave promise of becom- ing a truly great player. In his first campaign with the varsity last fall he was a standout in all the games played by the Tar Heels, and proved to the football public that all the pre- dictions made about his rosy future were not merely air-castles.

He is the fourth gridder from Har-Brack, a small high school of only 900 stu- dents, to be selected on All-American teams. The first of these was Cliff Montgomery, quarterback of Colum- 1932 eleven which de- feated Stanford, 7 to 0, in the Rose Bowl. The next was George Barclay, North Carolina’s first All-American, who was placed at tackle on the mythical eleven in 1934.
