“Auto Accident” in Alamance in the Past by Don Bolden, page 53. The accident happened July 29, 1913, when a group of local dignitaries was going to hear the Governor speak. Local coal merchant James Wesley Cates, a passenger, received a serious head injury. He died in 1918 from complications and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington.
