Description

Victoria Joyner lived in Rocky Mount during Hurricane Floyd in mid-September 1999. She talks about how her house flooded, and how she, like the rest of her community, lost everything. Joyner and her sick neighbor had to be rescued from their homes by firemen on a boat. She stayed with the sick woman at local shelters, but the woman died a few weeks later. Joyner expresses gratitude for various organizations that helped her following the flood, including local churches, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and FEMA. She also discusses how members of her community came together in the days after the storm.
