Members of the Jewish community bury prayer books and ritual objects at the Hebrew Cemetery in 1978. Sacred objects which are no longer usable are buried in a genizah (secret hiding place) instead of being discarded. The cemetery, founded in 1870, as the Hebrew Benevolent Society, is the oldest Jewish institution in Charlotte.
