Description

Dr. Jane G. Elchlepp recollects the planning of Duke Hospital North, which involved input from hundreds of staff and patients on how to correct problems that existed at Duke’s main hospital. The interview was conducted the year before Duke North was to open (1979). Committees and review groups worked to make sure that the new hospital reflected changes in hospital care over the previous 25 years. Dr. Elchlepp describes the layout and divisions of Duke North, highlighting details such as the children’s floor, color-coded bed towers, and separate elevators and corridors designated for specific departments.
