Description

In 1903, Erwin Mills' new modern school for white children replaced the one-room "field schools" in which children progressed at their own speed. Davie County's first graded school faced Watts Street at the corner of Cross Street. Most teachers attended college beyond Normal School. Above, Emma Grimes' first grade class poses in 1930.
