Description

The fully equipped Park Hill playground on Main Street featured seesaws, swings, tennis courts, and bandstand, where many gathered on Sunday evenings to hear the band and sing hymns. Cooleemee's community life beyond the mill included civic groups like the all-female Cotton Club and fraternal orders such as the Redmen and the Patriotic Sons of America, with the Textile Workers Union of America, organized locally in the late 1930s, perhaps the largest group in town.
