McGuire practiced medicine with Dr. James F. Martin until 1860 and then alone for a decade in Mocksville and County Line (1860-1870). After a brief period in Jersey County, IL (1870), McGuire returned to Mocksville to work with Dr. Dewitt C. Clement and then Dr. Kimbrough (1896-1900).
