Description

Prior to the California gold rush of 1849, North Carolina led the nation in gold production and was the largest gold producing state in the South into the 20th century. The Alderman map of 1887 listed a Gold Mine site in the vicinity of the County Line community. Other brief mentions of gold mines can be found in county records.
