Typed biography of textile mill worker, Mildred Gwin Andrews Transcription: MILDRED GWIN ANDREWS / Textile Biography / Mrs. Mildred Gwin Andrews has had a long and successful career in the Textile, Textile Machinery Industries and Trade Exposition field. / She was born and reared in Greenwood, Mississippi where her father who was a distinguished attorney also owned several large cotton plantations and one of the largest cotton sales companies in the South. There she studied law and with that education and a background and knowledge of cotton from economic and quality viewpoints, she obtained her first job in the Textile industry in Gastonia, North Carolina, where about 100 combed cotton textile mills were located. / She was executive director of the Combed Yarn Association there for 16 years, building the small association into one of national importance. In order to gain basic knowledge of cotton manufacturing she worked for a time on the night shift in a large mill, transferring from department to department until she was fully informed on all processes and machines for processing through opening - spinning - weaving - finishing, and obtained her certificate in manufacture from N.C. State Vocational Training. / She started the first organized public relations program for that industry and in cooperation with George Sloan, then president of the Cotton Textile Institute, helped establish National Cotton Week, a successful promotional event. She wrote two text books on cotton manufacturing and the cotton section of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica.
