MILDRED GWIN ANDREWS / Textile Biography / Mrs.
Mildred Gwin Andrews has had a long and successful career in the
Textile, Textile Machinery Industries and Trade Exposition field. /
She was born and reared in Greenwood, Mississippi where her father
who was a distinguished attorney also owned several large cotton
plantations and one of the largest cotton sales companies in the
South. There she studied law and with that education and a
background and knowledge of cotton from economic and quality
viewpoints, she obtained her first job in the Textile industry in
Gastonia, North Carolina, where about 100 combed cotton textile
mills were located. / She was executive director of the Combed Yarn
Association there for 16 years, building the small association into
one of national importance. In order to gain basic knowledge of
cotton manufacturing she worked for a time on the night shift in a
large mill, transferring from department to department until she was
fully informed on all processes and machines for processing through
opening - spinning - weaving - finishing, and obtained her
certificate in manufacture from N.C. State Vocational Training. /
She started the first organized public relations program for that
industry and in cooperation with George Sloan, then president of the
Cotton Textile Institute, helped establish National Cotton Week, a
successful promotional event. She wrote two text books on cotton
manufacturing and the cotton section of the Encyclopaedia
Brittanica.
