Description

Letter to Grand Lodge of North Carolina from St. Tammany Lodge No. 30 describing the expulsion of Henry B. Joy from their lodge and the reasoning behind it. Transcription: The Secretary of the Grand Lodge of NortH Carolina Raleigh To the Secretary of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina Brother The Institution of Masonry for so many ages held sacred and still continues so, like all other institutions is liable to be debased by the unworthyness of some rotten pillar or member, an occurance of which kind has lately taken place in St. Tammany Lodge in the year of our Lord 1807. A flagrant, infamous, and impious imposture by name Henry B. Joy has caused the greatest uneasyness and covered with shame the Bretheren of this Lodge. His conduct we deem unpardonable, nor are there words to express his Infamy, having been received unto the Lodge and remaining there some time with so demure & hypocritical demeanour as to lull to sleep the vigilence of the most wary. He gained our secret art as high as sublime master, eloped, left his fines & other arreages unpaid, cheated his patron & best friend, robbed a common prostitute, and in short swinled every creature who reposed trust in him. Here let us pause, and pray the Almighty Creator to guard and defend us, and every other Lodge from the adroitness and villainy of such a monster. By order of the worshipfull master I am directed to inform the Grand Lodge that for his unworthiness and apostacy he now stands unanimously expelled from St. Tammany's Lodge No. 30 of Wilmington. I remain with paternal regard Alex Hostler Secty Wilmington 8th Dec 1807
