Description

The photograph shows George Washington Clement (husband) and Melinda Brown Clement (wife). George Washington Clement, born into slavery about 1836, rose to become a successful farmer and landowner. In 1850, Davie County court records show that Elizabeth Clement inherited George, a boy of about 14, at the death of her father Henry Clement, Sr. In 1870 after the Civil War, George appears as a landowner in Davie County. He later moved to Rowan County near Livingstone College to enhance educational opportunities for his children. Two children, Fannie and Della, attended Livingstone College and became teachers. His son, George Addison, received his medical degree from Shaw University.
