Biddle Memorial Hall is the oldest structure on campus, constructed between 1883-1884 at a cost of $40,000, and was named the "University Administration Building" under the leadership of the first president, Dr. Stephen Mattoon. It received its current name in 1923 when the University's name changed from Biddle University to Johnson C. Smith University under the fifth president, Dr. Henry L. McCrorey, and in 1925, the clock tower was installed at a cost of $6,025. Biddle is the surname of the school's first major donor, Mrs. Henry J. Biddle; her husband died in 1862 while fighting for the Union in the Civil War. Under the current president, Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, the third major renovation on Biddle commenced in 2002 by Gantt Huberman after $6.7 million was raised, and was compieted in 2005.
