J. C. Booe entered the mercantile business in 1902 with a small store near Cana, located at a major crossroads. At its peak, six horse-drawn wagons might be parked in front of the store at the same time. Booe's eldest daughter, Naomi, enjoyed working in the store. She graduated valedictorian from Oxford College in Oxford, North Carolina in 1912.
