Description
Colonel Stewart opened his law office on the
square in Mocksville in 1888. He served as the attorney for the
Davie County Board of Education, attorney for the Town of
Mocksville, chairman of the Mocksville School Board, chairman of the
annual Masonic Picnic and a trustee of the First Baptist Church.
When ready to go home from a day's work, Stewart picked up the
telephone and when the operator said ""Number Please,"" he replied
""Jitney"" and hung up the phone. The town operator then called a
cab and told the driver to pick up Mr. Stewart at his office and
drive him home.
