Description

This home, still standing today, once belonged to Confederate colonel Dennis Dozier Ferebee, who graduated with a degree in law from the University of North Carolina in 1839. He opposed secession as unconstitutional but later took charge of the 1st North Carolina Brigade, part of which successfully defended the Dismal Swamp Canal locks from destruction by Union troops under General J. L. Reno on April 19, 1862. Photo courtesy of the State Archives of North Carolina.
