Description

The Rosenwald School in South Mills was one of 800 schools built in North Carolina with funding provided by Julius Rosenwald, who lived from 1862 until 1932. The Rosenwald School in South Mills continued to operate until the opening of Sawyer's Creek High School, which was soon renamed as Marian Anderson High School—after Marian Anderson, a classical contralto who was the first African American female to perform in the Metropolitan Opera, in 1955.
