Born at Cooleemee Plantation, Hairston graduated from the University of North Carolina law school in 1935. In 1954, he established a law practice in Mocksville and maintained it until 1977. At that time, Hairston became the second resident in the history of the county to be appointed as a Superior Court judge. Hairston also served three terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives.
