Etchison worked for Pan American Airlines for 36 years. In 1939, he served as flight engineer on the Yankee Clipper, the first commercial flight across the Atlantic Ocean from Baltimore to Marseille, France. In 1958, he served as flight engineer on the first jet commercial flight across the Atlantic from New York to Paris.
