Description

This is the only complete circular for Mr. & Mrs. Burwell’s Female School in Hillsborough, NC. It includes information on the course of study, tuition, patrons of the school and numerous students who attended. The school operated from 1837–1857, educating young white woman, and offered a rigorous curriculum like what young men of the day would study. Students who completed the course of study from the school were likely to use their knowledge to support their husbands and educate their children. For those who did not marry, they were well prepared to procure respectable positions as teachers. Numerous schools were established following the teaching methods of the Burwells and included the Nash & Kollock School in Hillsborough, Charlotte Female Institute (now Queens University), Peace Institute (now William Peace University) and Simonton Female Institute (now Mitchell Community College). Circular courtesy of Anne Andrews and is located in the collection of The Burwell School Historic Site.
