Description

Luther and Carney Bynum built Chatham's first important cotton mill in 1872 and sold it to J. M. Odell of Concord, NC in 1886. The frame mill was destroyed by fire in 1916 and was replaced by a brick structure in 1918. Located on the northeast side of the Haw River facing the community of Bynum's "Mill Hill," the mill accommodated spinning, weaving, and storage of textile materials. The photos show the dam, mill race, and interior machinery. Arthur Hill London III (1931-200), who took the photos in the 1950s, was the grandson of Arthur Hill London, Sr.,(1974-1969) who served as secretary and treasurer of the Odell Manufacturing Company from 1916 until the mid-1960s. Photographs were given to the Chatham County Historical Association by Kate Skilikas, daughter of Arthur Hill London III.
