[00:00:07.600] It has been stated [00:00:09.320] about ten percent [00:00:11.760] of the men in the country develop into leaders. [00:00:17.320] But a leader that, the man that [00:00:20.760] has natural qualifications for [00:00:23.360] leadership and an education [00:00:26.080] as well is vastly superior [00:00:30.120] to the man that depends upon his natural [00:00:35.520] gifts without training [00:00:38.200] and education. [00:00:41.240] A personal opinion expressed by John Motley Morehead, [00:00:44.920] one of our nation's leading creative industrialists who, [00:00:47.960] in combination with the University of North Carolina, [00:00:50.880] established a unique scholarship program. [00:00:53.760] The Morehead Awards. [00:00:57.760] [music] [00:01:10.720] Opening its doors shortly after our war of independence with England, [00:01:13.480] the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [00:01:16.280] is our nation's oldest state university. [00:01:19.920] The first enrollment consisted of some forty eager [00:01:22.440] students and two brave professors. [00:01:25.160] One hundred and seventy years later, over ten thousand students, [00:01:28.840] along with hundreds of outstanding educators and instructors, [00:01:31.040] are easily absorbed within [00:01:33.760] the spacious, tree covered campus. [00:01:36.386] [music] [00:01:41.080] Through the years an air of stability and solidarity has been established. [00:01:45.480] However, there is always a strong undercurrent of new [00:01:48.080] concepts and ideas originating from [00:01:50.600] student and teacher alike. [00:01:55.680] Freedom and academic excellence summarize [00:01:58.240] the meaning of the total Carolina experience. [00:02:01.400] For this university seeks for and stresses [00:02:03.920] superior performance. [00:02:06.471] [music] [00:02:10.400] Freedom permeates the university community. [00:02:13.400] No semblance of thought control is imposed upon [00:02:16.080] any faculty member. [00:02:17.840] Professors are free to investigate, [00:02:19.760] to pioneer, and speculate, and to stress [00:02:22.400] their academic convictions. [00:02:24.829] [music] [00:02:28.600] As a professor is free, so is the student [00:02:31.360] in almost every area of his life. [00:02:34.240] A minimum number of rules and regulations exist [00:02:36.800] with the respect to his personal conduct. [00:02:39.440] The University, through its honor system and student government, [00:02:42.840] seeks to develop self-possession and self-control in its students. [00:02:46.840] [music] [00:02:51.840] The University of North Carolina boasts a [00:02:54.480] long list of distinguished alumni. [00:02:56.640] One president, James Polk, one vice president, [00:03:00.120] many senators, congressmen, [00:03:01.800] diplomats and educators. [00:03:03.640] More than half the governors of North Carolina were University [00:03:06.240] graduates. [00:03:08.520] In the arts: Thomas Wolfe, Paul Green, Dick Adler, [00:03:11.240] Sidney Blackmer, men who have distinguished themselves [00:03:14.280] not only in North Carolina, but all over the world. [00:03:18.043] [music] [00:03:22.920] As is true at all universities, [00:03:24.840] many students come here on scholarship. [00:03:27.400] Any student who has a satisfactory academic record [00:03:30.600] and is definitely in need of aid may qualify [00:03:33.680] for financial assistance from the university. [00:03:36.400] Also at Chapel Hill, there exists a unique foundation [00:03:40.120] which annually grants merit awards [00:03:42.720] with no regard to financial need. [00:03:47.360] The Morehead Foundation has adapted, partially, [00:03:50.120] the scholarship plan of the Rhodes Scholarships to Oxford University. [00:03:54.480] However, the Morehead adaptation [00:03:57.000] is at the undergraduate level at Carolina. [00:04:02.040] Open to selected graduates of North Carolina high schools [00:04:05.000] and selected preparatory schools, [00:04:07.760] the Morehead Awards each year bring an outstanding [00:04:09.760] group of young men to the Chapel Hill campus as [00:04:12.360] Morehead Scholars. [00:04:14.880] Students seem to thrive on an academic diet of tradition, [00:04:17.840] a workable honor system with distinguished faculty members [00:04:20.520] explained by the President [00:04:23.200] of the University of North Carolina, [00:04:27.280] William C. Friday. [00:04:26.571] In back of me here [00:04:28.440] are the Old Well and Old East building, [00:04:30.840] two of the shrines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. [00:04:34.600] The red top building is Old East, which is symbolic [00:04:37.240] of the founding of the University, which was the first [00:04:40.080] state university to open its doors in our land. [00:04:43.440] During our history, we've had, of course, thousands of students [00:04:46.320] come here from all over the world and from every state in the Union. [00:04:50.160] Four hundred and twenty four of whom have been Morehead scholars. [00:04:53.520] These men have studied here and lived and worked under the [00:04:56.080] honor system of the university and presided [00:04:58.600] over their affairs through their own student government. [00:05:02.000] The students have been taught by many distinguished scholars who've [00:05:04.600] come from all of the major universities of the land [00:05:07.400] and who are men who have done significant work [00:05:10.080] in research and are distinguished teachers. [00:05:13.280] We, of course, like all institutions, are very proud of our alumni. [00:05:17.120] And among these [00:05:18.840] we are most proud, of course, Mr. John Motley Morehead, [00:05:22.000] who through his benefaction [00:05:23.400] established the Morehead Foundation. [00:05:26.240] He and five generations of his family [00:05:29.200] have been to the University of North Carolina. [00:05:32.040] And in establishing the foundation [00:05:33.640] he expressed the desire that by providing [00:05:36.800] these scholarships, he would continue [00:05:39.320] the noble and great tradition of this university [00:05:42.080] in service to the state, [00:05:43.360] the southern region which he loves, and the United States of America. [00:05:47.360] [music] [00:05:52.040] A long line of Moreheads have had distinguished careers. [00:05:55.440] Governor John M. Morehead, [00:05:57.760] noted for building railroads, roads, and public schools. [00:06:02.440] James Turner Morehead, father of Uncle Mot, [00:06:05.720] Confederate officer, and industrialist. [00:06:09.240] John Motley Morehead III of Rockingham County, North Carolina [00:06:12.560] and Rye, New York, was graduated from the [00:06:15.520] University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in the [00:06:18.040] class of 1891. [00:06:20.320] Scientist and author, corporation director, [00:06:23.120] diplomat, designing electrochemical engineer, [00:06:26.080] philanthropist. [00:06:28.600] Uncle Mot retained his great love for his alma mater. [00:06:31.640] He made many gifts beneficial to the state and the University. [00:06:35.640] [music] [00:06:39.560] With each gift, such as the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, [00:06:43.040] care has been taken that the gift consisted in whole [00:06:45.640] or in part of something which the University [00:06:48.200] could not provide for itself. [00:06:50.429] [music] [00:06:54.280] This sundial, surrounded by a beautiful rose garden, [00:06:57.640] was something which the taxpayers of the state would not have to supply. [00:07:01.760] By its addition, the campus of the University has taken [00:07:04.280] on an added luster, a showplace, [00:07:07.040] and a thing of beauty. [00:07:08.640] The sundial stands adjacent to the Morehead Building, [00:07:11.960] which houses the Morehead Foundation offices, [00:07:14.480] the Genevieve B. Morehead Art Gallery, and the Morehead Planetarium. [00:07:22.600] The Morehead Planetarium is the first in the world [00:07:25.160] owned and operated by a university. [00:07:27.840] The spectacular productions staged in the planetarium [00:07:30.760] portray exact heavenly configurations [00:07:33.680] from thousands of years past or [?]. [00:07:36.760] It is visited annually by thousands of school children and adults alike. [00:07:41.040] Astronaut John Glenn and his colleagues [00:07:43.560] visited the planetarium in preparation for orbiting the earth. [00:07:49.880] But the greatest gift of all has been the Morehead Foundation, [00:07:53.440] which inaugurated and administers the Morehead Plan. [00:07:56.960] The Morehead Program is so simple it is [00:07:59.480] often misunderstood. [00:08:01.880] Its sole purpose at present is to attract [00:08:04.560] to the University of Chapel Hill [00:08:06.720] outstanding young men who will add to the distinction [00:08:09.400] of the University while students [00:08:11.640] and who as alumni will reflect [00:08:14.240] credit on the university and the state. [00:08:16.720] The Morehead Award is tendered solely for outstanding merit. [00:08:20.240] Financial need is not considered [00:08:22.480] and no obligation of any kind other than [00:08:25.040] to make the most of one's opportunities [00:08:27.560] and to be a gentleman is incurred by its acceptance. [00:08:32.080] Each fall, Uncle Mot welcomed new Morehead Scholars [00:08:34.880] to Chapel Hill at the annual freshman party. [00:08:39.400] After dinner, the business of the day. [00:08:42.920] Seniors are introduced with costumes, setting the tone [00:08:45.680] of the evening's program. [00:08:47.986] [applause] [00:08:53.160] Those entering the Morehead Program, the freshmen [00:08:56.160] are introduced. [00:08:59.920] Then on to the entertainment with a skit [00:09:02.760] written, staged, and produced by the seniors. [00:09:07.320] Familiar personalities and standard procedures [00:09:09.880] or lampooned to the delight of all. [00:09:13.314] [music] [00:09:29.640] While visiting Chapel Hill, [00:09:30.000] Uncle Mot and John Lindsay Morehead, [00:09:32.840] who for years was Vice Chairman and Principal Administrator of the Morehead Program, [00:09:37.440] discuss the Morehead Awards and the reason [00:09:39.520] why they felt the program would be good for the University of North Carolina. [00:09:45.600] Well, it seemed to be very successful in England. [00:09:49.680] Very shortly after I graduated here, I spent [00:09:53.280] quite time in England [00:09:58.040] on business [00:10:02.320] installing electric machinery and [00:10:06.440] became quite well acquainted with a number of [00:10:12.680] Oxford students. [00:10:15.680] I was impressed by the success that they had [00:10:19.520] and it occurred to me that [00:10:22.280] whenever I got [?] [00:10:25.080] I'd follow that as much to an extent as I could. [00:10:29.186] [music] [00:10:32.520] The trustees of the Morehead Program have gone to great [00:10:35.280] lengths in their selection of schools to nominate candidates [00:10:38.120] for Morehead Awards. [00:10:39.720] Schools are visited, headmasters are interviewed. [00:10:44.920] In turn, the headmasters and members of their staffs are [00:10:47.520] invited to visit Chapel Hill [00:10:50.160] to assure themselves that the Morehead Program is conducted as represented. [00:10:54.480] The nominating school is then invited to participate in the Morehead Program. [00:11:02.000] Each spring a select group of young men is invited to Chapel Hill [00:11:04.600] for the final selection of new Morehead Scholars. [00:11:07.960] Prior to this time, they had been interviewed by committees [00:11:10.960] on a local or regional level. [00:11:13.200] A file has been compiled on each candidate with complete [00:11:16.120] background information. [00:11:20.360] Our candidate meets the board of trustees next. [00:11:23.560] This is an informal meeting. [00:11:25.480] The members talk with the candidate about a variety of subjects [00:11:28.360] so as to become better acquainted. [00:11:31.400] Talk to you about a few lighter subjects, perhaps. [00:11:35.200] I understand that you're a duck hunter? [00:11:37.000] That's right. [00:11:39.080] Did you ever miss one? [00:11:40.400] I've missed a whole bunch. [00:11:43.200] Well we have something in common there. [00:11:47.240] I noticed from your record that you attended a [00:11:48.520] southern school for two years before transferring [00:11:51.200] to a northern preparatory school. [00:11:53.800] Did you find this transition difficult? [00:11:56.360] It was. It was it was very [00:11:58.960] interesting to come from [00:12:01.800] the south and to go to the north because there are different, [00:12:04.880] different attitudes [00:12:08.560] about different subjects [00:12:10.520] in the north, in the south. [00:12:11.520] It was interesting to compare the two. [00:12:13.920] I think I've gained a great deal of valuable experience. [00:12:17.520] In short, the question is not [00:12:19.160] only what will the university do for the young man, [00:12:22.640] but what will this young man do for the university? [00:12:26.640] [music] [00:12:30.760] After all the interviews are completed [00:12:33.400] Vice Chairman of the Board, John L. Morehead, [00:12:36.040] informs them that they have all been accepted [00:12:37.360] and tells them what is expected of them. [00:12:41.800] The Morehead Award [00:12:44.120] means anything and it will mean something. [00:12:47.600] It will mean what you gentlemen make it mean. [00:12:52.200] There's nothing we can do about that. [00:12:55.520] And unless you intend [00:12:58.480] to pull your weight in the boat, do your part, [00:13:03.520] and make your fellow Morehead Scholars proud [00:13:08.480] that you [00:13:10.440] are a member of their group [00:13:13.640] don't accept your award. [00:13:16.400] Turn it down. [00:13:18.520] If you're coming to college, to use [00:13:22.440] this university as a good winter resort [00:13:26.000] for the next four years, and you can do just that, [00:13:30.840] but don't come as a Morehead Scholar. [00:13:33.960] It isn't fair to your associates. [00:13:37.160] We don't care. [00:13:38.400] There's no way you can hurt us, [00:13:41.440] but you can hurt yourselves [00:13:43.440] and you can hurt the other people [00:13:46.040] who have been, are, and will be [00:13:50.520] Morehead Scholars of the future. [00:13:52.720] You'll have problems, all of us have. [00:13:55.771] To that end, [00:13:58.040] we maintain a staff, a full time staff, [00:14:02.560] of four people in the foundation offices. [00:14:06.840] Mr. Armstrong, Coach Bob [?], [00:14:11.600] Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Perry. [00:14:14.920] All of them know their way around this university. [00:14:18.080] I counsel you to take advantage [00:14:22.080] of the opportunity to know these people, [00:14:24.840] to make them your friends and for you to be their friends. [00:14:28.680] You will profit immeasurably thereby. [00:14:34.040] We are very proud of you [00:14:36.920] else we wouldn't have selected you. [00:14:40.320] We are grateful to you for [00:14:42.720] for undergoing the inconvenience, [00:14:47.400] expenditures of time and trouble, [00:14:49.720] to travel down here and [00:14:51.000] submit to the many questions [00:14:54.040] which have been asked you. [00:14:56.200] We hope very much [00:14:59.160] that you have found your trip rewarding [00:15:02.240] and that you've enjoyed your visit to the university. [00:15:05.143] [music] [00:15:08.040] By accepting the Morehead Award, these [00:15:10.640] young men represent a widening circle of outstanding [00:15:13.400] schools sending their best to Chapel Hill. [00:15:17.080] On a statewide television program originating from [00:15:19.640] the University's own television station, [00:15:22.240] they were welcomed into the Morehead Program with a personal [00:15:25.040] greeting from Uncle Mot. [00:15:27.229] [music] [00:15:33.960] Morehead Scholars come from varying backgrounds [00:15:37.200] from many schools in North Carolina and out-of-state. [00:15:40.360] Christ's School, Woodbury Forest, [00:15:43.120] St. Albans, [?], Andover, [00:15:45.920] Exeter, Deerfield Academy, [00:15:48.600] and other outstanding preparatory schools. [00:15:54.720] Academic proficiency alone does not qualify [00:15:57.240] one to become a Morehead Scholar, [00:16:01.720] nor does athletic ability alone qualify. [00:16:07.360] Polish and charm alone will not suffice. [00:16:10.480] The Morehead Scholar is a combination of all these [00:16:13.680] character, honesty, ambition [00:16:16.480] and promise of achievement. [00:16:18.760] He is a young man trained to accept responsibility [00:16:21.840] in the world of tomorrow. [00:16:24.071] [music] [00:16:28.640] The University of North Carolina is among the nation's most beautiful. [00:16:31.320] The campus is on a [00:16:33.840] hill set in the midst of beautiful forests. [00:16:36.640] The mid-south climate is ideal. [00:16:39.520] And in the fall, when the air is nippy, it's [00:16:42.120] time for torchlight parades accompanied by [00:16:44.880] pep rallies heralding the football season. [00:16:50.280] It's an ideal college atmosphere sprinkled with football weekend. [00:16:54.280] [music] [00:17:15.265] [music and applause] [00:17:37.041] [music] [00:17:50.271] [music and applause] [00:18:30.713] [music] [00:18:34.440] The warm golden days of autumn [00:18:37.200] stretch slowly into late November. [00:18:41.000] The leaves have barely fallen when a glorious [00:18:43.560] spring bursts upon the campus in early March. [00:18:47.560] [music] [00:19:23.920] At Chapel Hill, approximately one fourth of the [00:19:26.440] undergraduate male students are affiliated with twenty-four [00:19:29.240] social and four professional fraternities. [00:19:32.320] These organizations provide an opportunity for the student [00:19:35.000] to identify with a small group for mutual [00:19:37.840] benefit and support. [00:19:39.760] Each fraternity has a program of social, [00:19:42.320] athletic, and self-governing activities. [00:19:45.160] And here, too, considerable stress is placed upon the importance [00:19:48.200] of academic achievement. [00:19:50.157] [music] [00:19:53.960] University residence halls provide housing for more [00:19:56.640] than half the students. [00:19:59.280] This experience in daily living often has profound influence [00:20:02.240] on individual growth and development. [00:20:04.857] [music] [00:20:09.480] The University of North Carolina provides a program [00:20:12.040] of honors study for exceptionally well qualified students, [00:20:14.760] many of whom are Morehead Scholars. [00:20:18.000] The program is invitational and highly selective. [00:20:21.280] Each year, fifty entering freshmen are appointed. [00:20:24.440] They are placed in special reserve sections of required [00:20:27.280] general college courses, [?] and fundamentals [00:20:30.440] is left largely to the students in these sections. [00:20:33.640] Successful completion of the freshman honors program [00:20:36.640] brings an invitation to participate in the sophomore honors program [00:20:39.400] in which students continue to [00:20:42.000] enroll in advanced sections. [00:20:44.129] [music] [00:20:49.200] After successful completion of undergraduate work at Carolina, [00:20:51.720] a student may be admitted to the graduate school [00:20:54.640] or to one of the graduate professional schools [00:20:57.480] located on the same campus. [00:20:59.643] [music] [00:21:02.960] The Morehead Award is currently a grant of [00:21:05.560] money for undergraduate study at the University of North Carolina. [00:21:09.560] When an award is accepted, funds are immediately [00:21:12.480] earmarked for a four year course of study and [00:21:15.040] placed in a savings account. [00:21:16.880] Hence, the award cannot fail for lack of funds, [00:21:20.040] nor can it fail for lack of candidates [00:21:22.560] with a never ending search for the outstanding young man. [00:21:26.157] [music] [00:21:29.960] It takes the boy has [00:21:32.560] graduated some years to get some sand [00:21:35.200] on the rail and show what he can do, [00:21:38.480] but some of our early graduates are certainly [00:21:41.040] showing what ordinarily would pass for juniors. [00:21:44.960] How much of that is about [00:21:46.200] training and how much of it is natural ability? [00:21:48.760] Why nobody can say. [00:21:52.280] But we do see that without a higher education [00:21:56.457] why, [00:21:58.320] the boy just, just hasn't got a chance. [00:22:01.600] You're just like someone [00:22:03.960] having their ability. [00:22:05.160] And that we have tried to get [00:22:09.080] superlative men [00:22:12.960] by getting the gifted boys, [00:22:15.640] and the boys with the most capacity, [00:22:18.600] and adding to it their educational features [00:22:21.880] which we, [00:22:24.400] right up to the [00:22:27.280] minute really, in this [00:22:30.240] class of education. [00:22:36.240] The Morehead Awards, an idea [00:22:38.760] nurtured into reality cannot help [00:22:41.360] but have a lasting influence on the future [00:22:44.360] of our state and nation.
