[00:00:22.040] [music] [00:00:24.920] Are we almost there daddy? [00:00:20.920] Mh-mm. Just around this next curve. [00:00:23.371] [music] [00:00:37.160] The Southeastern Jurisdictional Council [00:00:39.680] of the Methodist Church presents: [00:00:43.680] [music] [00:01:14.840] This is the story of Lake Junaluska. [00:01:17.800] High up in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina [00:01:21.360] where Methodists from all over the world meet together for fellowship, [00:01:25.840] inspiration, and worship. [00:01:28.643] [music] [00:01:37.720] To the new administration building they go for information and registration. [00:01:43.157] [music] [00:01:49.560] Here, too, the staff meets to welcome the good news of the great summer season. [00:01:54.657] [music] [00:02:02.120] A summer to be filled with lectures and sermons, [00:02:05.320] music and melody, fellowship and fun. [00:02:08.480] Much of it centered in the George R. Stuart Auditorium. [00:02:11.600] [music] [00:02:14.640] Many Methodists have built permanent homes at Lake Junaluska, [00:02:18.480] but for those who prefer hotel accommodations [00:02:21.280] the assembly operates Lambeth Inn, [00:02:24.000] named for the famous missionary, Bishop Walter R. Lambeth. [00:02:28.520] The Terrace Hotel is also operated by the assembly. [00:02:32.171] [music] [00:02:37.400] The Colonial Hotel is privately owned. [00:02:41.014] [music] [00:02:45.920] And the popular Junaluska Apartments provide [00:02:48.760] for families who prefer housekeeping facilities. [00:02:54.360] For others, there is Friendly Lakeside Lodge. [00:02:58.000] [music] [00:03:06.800] Recently constructed as the World Methodist Council Building, [00:03:10.720] which will also be the home [00:03:12.080] of the Methodist Historical Society. [00:03:14.943] [music] [00:03:22.560] The new Paul B. Kern Youth Center now gives young [00:03:25.320] people a place for fun, fellowship, and serious study. [00:03:29.257] [music] [00:03:38.840] Under cloud filled skies at the end of World War II, [00:03:43.320] formal groundbreaking ceremonies [00:03:45.360] initiated the building of Memorial Chapel. [00:03:48.560] [music] [00:04:50.334] [music] [00:05:05.120] Each year since the first great missionary [00:05:07.720] conference in the summer of 1913, [00:05:10.640] Methodists have met at the lake in conferences, [00:05:13.440] schools, workshops, institutes, [00:05:16.000] and camp meetings for training, [00:05:18.600] for education, and soul dedication. [00:05:21.729] [music] [00:05:38.520] Lake Junaluska was originally a dream in [00:05:41.080] the minds of a few Methodist laymen [00:05:43.720] who in 1908 first felt the need for [00:05:46.240] an assembly where Minister Layman could meet [00:05:48.880] in a common cause. [00:05:50.800] Years ago, this dream captured the minds of [00:05:53.120] men like John R. Pepper, [00:05:55.240] Bishop James Adkins, Dr. George R. Stuart, [00:05:58.800] and Bishop James Cannon Junior. [00:06:01.240] These all helped bring the assembly into being. [00:06:05.800] Later, men like Dr. W. A. Lambeth [00:06:07.480] who led in the debt paying [00:06:08.880] movement during the Depression. [00:06:11.240] And today we're indebted to men like [00:06:14.560] Bishop Arthur J. Moore and Dr. Elmer T. Clark, [00:06:17.680] who have stood by the lake in hours of great need. [00:06:21.640] Then forget not the efforts of all our bishops, [00:06:24.280] ministers, laymen, women, and young people, [00:06:26.840] all who work today with Mr. Edwin L. Jones, [00:06:31.080] Chairman of the Board of Trustees, [00:06:33.160] in the creative task of building a greater assembly [00:06:36.160] to serve the people called Methodists. [00:06:39.143] [music] [00:06:50.440] Methodists all gain at the lake [00:06:53.000] fellowship, knowledge, and inspiration. [00:06:57.000] [music] [00:07:01.120] Dreams come from fellowship, ideas [00:07:04.200] from inspiration, and challenge from the preached word. [00:07:08.200] [music] [00:07:31.400] Memories of great moments in Memorial Chapel [00:07:34.480] will live through long years and dark hours. [00:07:38.200] [music] [00:07:55.760] Peace and quiet [00:07:57.040] come in the beauty of farm and field [00:07:59.600] as one discovers the glory of God's growing things [00:08:03.400] and the blue sky above. [00:08:05.757] [music] [00:08:40.360] From deep in the mountains above Junaluska [00:08:42.920] comes a stream [00:08:45.520] which divides on rocky ground, [00:08:46.960] yet meets again in [?] hills [00:08:48.800] to become a twin waterfall. [00:08:51.571] [music] [00:09:04.880] By these waters, young people meet [00:09:07.600] to become one again [00:09:09.440] in their search for life's great meaning. [00:09:12.571] [music] [00:09:52.040] Beyond Soco Falls is the look out [00:09:54.280] over Maggie Valley. [00:09:56.280] Some record its compelling beauty in photograph, [00:09:59.720] others in memory alone. [00:10:02.114] [music] [00:10:35.320] Three trees on a hill become a constant [00:10:38.120] reminder of another hill and another day. [00:10:41.643] [music] [00:10:46.440] Young people meet here, too, at Shackford Hall, [00:10:49.520] the Educational Center for Study and Conference. [00:10:55.240] After a day of study comes a moment of prayer and meditation, [00:10:59.240] and perhaps a dream [00:11:00.440] that a call may come to be God's minister and preach the gospel. [00:11:05.000] Even as John Wesley, who said, [00:11:07.600] "I look upon the world as my parish." [00:11:10.371] [music] [00:11:43.840] Another finds a challenge in the face of [00:11:46.440] Francis Asbury, first bishop of American Methodism, [00:11:50.514] [music] [00:11:56.143] who in his long journeys across the wilderness [00:11:58.600] holding conferences, establishing churches, [00:12:01.280] and appointing ministers, often rode from [00:12:04.000] Agusta or Charleston up the Cherokee trail, [00:12:07.920] stopping for the night near to [00:12:11.160] the Junaluska Valley [00:12:12.040] and on across the mountains to churches in the Holston Hills. [00:12:15.786] [music] [00:12:23.600] Today on many of these selfsame trails, [00:12:26.440] young people may ride and prepare for life's [00:12:29.160] new roads that are equally as rough as those [00:12:31.920] Francis Asbury conquered. [00:12:33.957] [music] [00:12:41.960] For the very young life, too, is adventurous. [00:12:45.243] [music] [00:13:53.240] This playground, where children make their memories [00:13:55.960] of golden hours, was made available by [00:13:58.640] Mr. and Mrs. Ivey, always beloved, [00:14:01.920] ever young in spirit. [00:14:04.029] [music] [00:14:16.000] For young people, the swimming pool affords one [00:14:18.520] of the luxuries and some of the pleasures of a summer vacation. [00:14:22.520] [music] [00:14:42.560] For small sized people, there's a small sized pool. [00:14:45.900] [music] [00:14:57.720] Shh! This may be a record shot. [00:15:14.880] A swimming pool for the young people, [00:15:17.040] a wading pool for the children, [00:15:18.800] a golf course for the adults. [00:15:20.720] These are all yours at Lake Junaluska. [00:15:23.560] For here is rest of body and relaxation of mind. [00:15:27.320] These with an afternoon stroll are good preparations [00:15:30.520] for days of work and study. [00:15:32.814] [horns blowing] [00:15:38.271] [music] [00:16:02.320] Best of all for a summer afternoon is a cruise on the Cherokee. [00:16:05.280] A quiet hour among [00:16:07.960] friends, both old and new, adds much [00:16:10.600] to the pleasure of a trip. [00:16:12.400] [music] [00:18:51.440] Here in the quiet afternoon, there is more than [00:18:54.120] this day or this summer. [00:18:56.760] For young people, here is training for the serious [00:18:59.440] task of piloting their lives over waters rough and smooth. [00:19:04.040] For older people, the shore slips past like time [00:19:07.800] and there are memories of long [00:19:09.320] toil and hard won achievements. [00:19:11.957] [music] [00:19:21.000] Lake Junaluska [00:19:21.520] through the years has been a place of dreams and memories, [00:19:25.520] dreams of battles [00:19:26.960] yet unfought and victories yet not won. [00:19:30.280] Memories of moments when God and man [00:19:33.160] met beside the lake shore blue. [00:19:35.960] A place where dreams become realities [00:19:38.640] and memories of constant joy. [00:19:41.857] [music] [00:20:28.400] The thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. [00:20:31.840] A word or two. [00:20:33.200] A touch of the hand. [00:20:34.840] A soft glance. [00:20:36.600] A quiet stroll by the lake at evening. [00:20:39.657] [music] [00:21:29.000] And who will say that this, too, is not a part of Lake Junaluska? [00:21:33.786] [music] [00:23:11.280] This place of achievement, where God's hand has touched, [00:23:15.760] is in the Junaluska Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains [00:23:19.440] of North Carolina in America. [00:23:23.160] This is the Junaluska story. [00:23:25.120] [music]
