[00:00:24.000] The following program is produced [00:00:25.640] by Community Video Services of Durham Technical Institute. [00:00:29.800] [music] [00:01:03.160] Good evening, I'm Cynthia Watts. [00:01:05.400] Welcome to the Arts in Durham. [00:01:07.840] The Durham Recreation Department, [00:01:09.560] an associate of the Durham Arts Council, [00:01:12.000] has for the past several weeks [00:01:13.680] been dedicating several parks in the Durham community. [00:01:16.840] The Old Farm residents had their day this past Saturday. [00:01:20.480] Mrs. Annette Ekstrom, [00:01:22.120] president of the Residents [00:01:24.143] Council in Old Farms, [00:01:25.800] welcomed council members [00:01:27.840] Paul Bland and William Smith [00:01:30.457] to the area, along with other platform guests. [00:01:33.520] Let's watch that park dedication. [00:01:39.320] But we would like to welcome you [00:01:41.986] to this community park [00:01:44.000] and we hope that you would take an opportunity to look around [00:01:47.480] the facilities here this afternoon and admire some of the handiwork [00:01:51.314] that some of our community members have [00:01:54.360] put forth a lot of effort doing. [00:01:57.440] Some of these items on display this afternoon [00:02:00.443] have been made at the various [00:02:02.720] recreation centers throughout the city of Durham. [00:02:05.640] And therefore, we have [00:02:07.614] tended to utilize those facilities as best we could and [00:02:11.320] making different items and expressing our talents here. [00:02:16.000] So one of the indications here is that [00:02:18.986] recreation in the city of Durham is [00:02:20.960] very important to [00:02:22.971] each and every community and to every citizen within the community. [00:02:26.800] And for that particular reason, we [00:02:30.160] are very happy to be here [00:02:32.414] so that those of you who have not been to the park [00:02:35.714] will have an opportunity to see what we have here [00:02:38.680] and also have an opportunity to look [00:02:41.160] around and see what we need [00:02:42.829] as far as the community is concerned. [00:02:45.200] So without any further ado, I'll [00:02:48.320] follow the program [00:02:49.857] that's being passed around to you. [00:02:53.600] At this time, [00:02:54.800] I would like to welcome to the stand [00:02:57.000] and to the podium our [00:02:58.757] president of the Old Farm Community Association, [00:03:02.200] Mrs. Annette Ekstrom, who will [00:03:04.314] welcome you to the Old Farm Park. [00:03:06.771] [applause] [00:03:10.840] First of all, I'd like to say that this is indeed an [00:03:15.920] opportunity for me to [00:03:17.800] come before you to say a few remarks [00:03:19.986] about the [00:03:22.200] city government [00:03:24.029] and how that relates to Old Farm. [00:03:26.960] Now, Councilman Smith will give the declaratory remarks, [00:03:31.560] however, I would like to say that [00:03:35.080] this park is a part of the [00:03:38.529] Program for Progress [00:03:41.000] bond issue several years ago. [00:03:44.560] And in that issue there were several parks [00:03:47.120] and several other facilities that the city built, [00:03:50.680] and we were very proud that Old Farm was included [00:03:54.071] in that appropriation. [00:03:56.600] In addition, I would like to say, [00:03:58.240] even though we had a Program for Progress [00:04:01.300] bond referendum that was approved and passed, [00:04:04.640] one of the things that we as a community [00:04:07.640] want to do, and that is [00:04:09.614] to send a message to City Hall [00:04:12.757] that progress did not stop [00:04:15.680] with the construction [00:04:18.086] of the Old Farm Park. [00:04:20.240] But we hope that this is a start. [00:04:23.640] A start for more community involvement [00:04:27.171] and a start for [00:04:28.371] requesting better facilities in the park - [Child] Daddy, look! [00:04:32.120] So that we can—she wants to make a speech too— [00:04:37.640] so that we can in the future make sure that [00:04:41.000] we have adequate facilities [00:04:43.143] for all of our children in this area. [00:04:46.200] Thank you very much. [00:04:48.360] [laughs and applause] [00:04:54.560] Thank you, Councilman Bland, for the very timely remarks. [00:04:58.080] And also to the young [00:04:59.829] Bland who seems [00:05:00.960] to have a problem with the balloon this afternoon. [00:05:06.280] Mayor Kevin unfortunately cannot be with us this afternoon. [00:05:11.440] However, we have instead [00:05:13.920] Councilman Bill Smith, [00:05:15.920] who represents the city councilman [00:05:17.760] for the city of Durham and he will [00:05:20.571] bring you greetings from the city of Durham. [00:05:23.200] Mr. Smith. [00:05:27.320] Thank you, Mr. Johnson. [00:05:29.160] If I had known that [00:05:30.600] Paul was going to be rained out last week and [00:05:33.600] couldn't speak at Birchwood then I would have been glad to [00:05:35.857] yield to him today, but I'm very pleased [00:05:38.640] to be here, to bring a few remarks to you on this [00:05:42.800] now, sunshiny day on a very important occasion, [00:05:46.329] the dedication of this park. [00:05:49.320] One of the things that is true about [00:05:51.771] cities is that they go on no matter who [00:05:55.800] is in the administration and who is sitting on the city council. [00:05:59.920] The Program for Progress was [00:06:02.200] envisioned and carried through [00:06:04.520] long before I ever thought I would be a member of the city council. [00:06:08.400] So indeed, it is a [00:06:10.586] follow through on something that others have done [00:06:13.760] that I stand here today. [00:06:15.157] And I think that's fine because [00:06:17.520] sometimes some of us get the idea that we are [00:06:21.100] indispensable. [00:06:22.840] And as a matter of fact, [00:06:23.920] and unfortunately perhaps [00:06:25.700] from the standpoint of each of us, [00:06:27.360] we really aren't because [00:06:30.257] those things which are important do go on. [00:06:33.880] People have dedicated themselves who are unnamed [00:06:37.143] and who were unremembered and in a [00:06:38.880] specific way to seeing that a facility like this [00:06:42.357] will be here. [00:06:43.720] This is the product of the dreaming [00:06:46.160] and the planning [00:06:47.914] and the giving and the working [00:06:49.920] of thousands of people [00:06:51.971] in our city of Durham. [00:06:54.000] And that leads me to the next [00:06:55.557] and more important thing that I would say to you. [00:06:58.360] I'm very proud to be a member of our city council [00:07:01.240] and to be a citizen of the city of Durham. [00:07:04.480] The other night, I was watching a program [00:07:06.500] about a controversial issue in our community [00:07:09.720] and there were people who were expressing [00:07:12.720] themselves as having the opinion that Durham is [00:07:15.957] a laughing stock of North Carolina, [00:07:18.929] that we have fallen behind. [00:07:21.000] They made other remarks like that [00:07:22.614] which I found to be quite offensive [00:07:24.680] because I don't find this a town [00:07:27.329] at all which is laughable town. [00:07:32.000] I've lived a good many other places and have [00:07:34.595] thought about living in some others, [00:07:35.833] and I've never been anywhere else [00:07:38.560] that pleased me as much as Durham. [00:07:41.240] Like every other place on the face of the earth, [00:07:44.080] we do have room enough for improvement, [00:07:46.000] that we won't get too satisfied with where we are. [00:07:49.160] But there are many, many things to celebrate in this city. [00:07:53.320] If we are a city which sometimes seems to be disunited, [00:07:56.429] it is because we have [00:07:57.920] people who are able to be heard [00:08:00.657] who in many other communities are not heard. [00:08:03.440] There are people who are organized [00:08:04.720] into community groups like your Old Farm Association, [00:08:07.680] people who organized into [00:08:09.614] group speaking for particular [00:08:12.414] sections of our community, [00:08:14.360] and they are heard [00:08:15.600] and what they have to say is given importance. [00:08:19.160] And something happens because it's said. [00:08:24.040] If that looks like disunity then I think every community ought to have more of it [00:08:27.000] because there are [00:08:29.160] different kinds of people living in this [00:08:31.800] cosmopolitan city. [00:08:33.840] And all of us, if we're going to be heard, [00:08:36.229] are going to have opportunities to express [00:08:38.400] ourselves and we won't always be in agreement. [00:08:41.360] And yet it is amazing that we get [00:08:43.343] so many, many things done. [00:08:44.685] And this park program, the Program for Progress, [00:08:48.160] and the park program being the most [00:08:49.880] important part of that was done in this city. [00:08:52.720] And we stand here today to celebrate what [00:08:55.286] foresight went into that. [00:08:57.360] And I'm glad to be a part of it. [00:08:59.243] I congratulate you upon having this beautiful place [00:09:01.560] for all of you [00:09:03.843] to come and run and play. [00:09:05.000] There's no need for anyone to have to [00:09:07.443] worry about growing up on just steaming [00:09:09.160] city sidewalks that lives anywhere near this park. [00:09:12.680] Enjoy it. [00:09:13.743] [music] [00:09:44.403] [group singing a church hymn] [00:09:53.479] [piano transitions to a new song] [00:12:13.186] [music] [00:12:22.829] [group singing a church hymn] [00:14:36.240] I'm sitting in Old Farms Park with Hjordis Blanchard and some [00:14:41.160] of the children who are residents in Old Farms. [00:14:38.829] Old Farms today, of course, is dedicating its park [00:14:42.280] through the city recreation department. [00:14:44.143] And I'm going to be talking with Hjordis about some [00:14:45.960] of the questions that the children ask her while she's painting their faces. [00:14:49.640] Hjordis, I want to welcome you and [00:14:51.943] the residents of Old Farms to the Arts in Durham. [00:14:54.320] And I would like to know what are some [00:14:55.560] of the things you talk with the children about why you're painting their faces? [00:14:58.440] The first thing I do tell them to sit very still. [00:15:03.000] Then we usually just talk about what they want [00:15:05.080] and what colors they want on their face [00:15:07.286] and what designs they want. [00:15:09.040] Do you ever get any special requests for anything? [00:15:11.760] Yes. Lots of children want their names, like Lisa, [00:15:14.986] on their foreheads. [00:15:16.800] - [Cynthia] Lisa, how old are you and what school do you attend? [00:15:21.720] I'm nine and I go to [?] school. [00:15:23.400] - [Cynthia] I see you've gotten your neighbor across your face. [00:15:26.640] Hjordis, I want to see the finished product of this. [00:15:28.240] What are some of the things you've been doing with the kids today? [00:15:31.400] - [Hjordis] Clown faces are real popular [00:15:34.040] and KISS. They like their face painted with big stars all over [00:15:39.200] and butterflies. [00:15:41.080] - [Cynthia] Thank you Hjordis for sharing this time with me. [00:15:43.720] And Bob, will you please focus in on some [00:15:45.614] of these children's faces for me, please? [00:15:47.657] [music] [00:15:51.480] - [Hjordis] Look at the camera! [00:15:53.543] [music] [Hjordis laughs] [00:16:07.040] The Duke Children's Classic was held on last weekend. [00:16:11.360] Many, many celebrities came to Durham [00:16:13.400] to support this prestigious golf tournament. [00:16:16.040] Let's watch as Asa Spaulding talks with two persons among many [00:16:20.700] who share in the responsibilities [00:16:22.720] and objectives of this prestigious golf tournament. [00:16:29.840] I'm standing here with Dr. Samuel Katz [00:16:33.120] and Linda Holder. [00:16:34.440] Linda, we're going to come back to you in a few minutes, [00:16:36.516] but since this is the Duke's Children Golf Classic [00:16:39.040] I'd like to talk with Sam just a moment. [00:16:40.680] Sam, we're certainly delighted to be here with you this afternoon. [00:16:43.800] And this is the first day of the two day golf classic. [00:16:47.400] That's right. [00:16:48.000] Are you satisfied with the attendance [00:16:50.629] and the way everything's going so far? [00:16:51.720] Considering the snow and icicles [00:16:53.800] and the cold weather today, [00:16:55.457] I think we're fortunate to have such a good crowd. [00:16:57.600] We're really pleased with the community support. [00:16:59.760] - [Asa] Let's talk about the negatives [00:17:01.129] and then we can come back to the positives. [00:17:02.440] What in the way of no shows? [00:17:03.960] Did you have any celebrities that you expected to be [00:17:06.384] here that were not able to be here? [00:17:07.320] - [Sam] Yes. Each year we know that that's something [00:17:09.149] we anticipate in advance. [00:17:10.360] All of these folks try to keep their [00:17:11.720] calendars open and then something comes up at the last minute. [00:17:14.600] I think the only two folks who couldn't [00:17:16.320] get here were one of the comedians, Jackie Vernon. [00:17:19.920] And there's one other person that I've already forgotten who it was. [00:17:23.120] But two out of about 40, I think is a good record. [00:17:26.000] - [Asa] Well, that's just great. [00:17:27.029] We saw David Hartman out on the course a few minutes ago [00:17:28.880] and I'm sure we're going to be talking with David Hartman shortly. [00:17:31.240] Well, that's a classic example of how good people are. [00:17:33.640] He was filming until late last night in Washington. [00:17:36.720] He took a plane home, didn't get home to New York [00:17:38.986] till two in the morning and yet [00:17:40.400] he was here this morning to play. [00:17:42.000] Well, that's both a credit to you and to the university. [00:17:44.760] Let's talk for just a few moments about [00:17:46.520] some of the activities that have gone on [00:17:48.843] at the pediatrics department [00:17:50.800] since I talked with you on our show in the public interest last year. [00:17:53.920] What are some of the things that you are into this year? [00:17:56.720] Well, I think this year's program has [00:17:59.120] focused principally on children with chronic lung disease. [00:18:02.400] We have a large population of children [00:18:04.943] that are cared for at Duke with severe asthma, [00:18:08.160] with cystic fibrosis, with chronic bronchiectasis. [00:18:12.320] Each year we've tried to focus on one or another group [00:18:15.000] as the highlight for the clinic and that's been our group this year. [00:18:19.080] - [Asa] What are the specific financial goals of this year for the [?]? [00:18:23.800] We'd like to see our goal reach $80,000 this year. [00:18:27.560] We always aspire a little bit longer [00:18:29.840] and further than we're necessarily going to reach, [00:18:31.920] but if you don't reach high, you don't ever achieve. [00:18:34.360] - [Asa] What was the goal last year and how did— [00:18:36.480] The goal last year was $75,000 and we got to about $65,000. [00:18:40.320] - [Asa] I think that's tremendous. [00:18:43.140] Well, we certainly are very hopeful you'll reach your goal this year. [00:18:43.320] We certainly are. Thank you. [00:18:45.413] - [Asa] Let's stop for a moment, I don't want you to leave us Sam. [00:18:47.160] We'd like to talk this nice young lady over here. [00:18:49.200] Linda you are involved with the Durham United Way. [00:18:51.928] Right. [00:18:52.440] How's the status of that campaign so far? [00:18:54.240] Well, we're just rolling into the campaign, just really getting started [00:18:57.960] but we have high hopes. [00:19:00.680] The budget committees are meeting now with the agencies [00:19:03.600] and so the budget group is just getting underway. [00:19:07.400] And that's the first step. - [Asa] Absolutely. [00:19:09.571] Right. [00:19:09.600] This year's goal is close to a million dollars. [00:19:12.120] I guess we ought to say really a million dollar goal [00:19:14.280] even though the projections last year were [00:19:18.960] somewhere in the neighborhood of $980,000. [00:19:19.440] That's right. - [Asa] Why not just say a million dollars? [00:19:20.960] Well, I'm afraid to say quite yet, but I certainly would hope for that. [00:19:26.040] We have not set a goal yet that won't be [00:19:28.257] decided definitely until July, [00:19:30.600] but I certainly would hope for a million dollars. [00:19:36.120] The Arts in Durham and its camera crew [00:19:39.143] went out to the greens and the fairways to get [00:19:41.440] a look at the celebrities as they putt, [00:19:44.457] swing, and sign autographs. [00:19:47.720] Let's watch as Barbara Mandrell, [00:19:50.614] country western singer Archie Campbell of Heehaw, [00:19:54.480] and Duke's James Sparnarkel look at the fairways and putts. [00:19:58.720] I signed autographs for the Durham community. [00:20:02.760] [music] [00:21:40.080] And of course, this program would not be complete [00:21:43.080] without an interview with the honorary chairman of this tournament— [00:21:47.486] Mr. Perry Como. [00:21:49.080] I talked with Perry along with Asa Spaulding [00:21:51.760] on Saturday about his emotional involvements in this tournament. [00:21:55.960] There is also an intriguing young man [00:21:58.757] that we will take a look at that is blind. [00:22:01.160] And he shows us his putt and his swing on Duke's golf course. [00:22:07.040] [music] [00:22:36.800] As one of the key people [00:22:37.640] who has been involved with this from its very inception, [00:22:39.560] give me your just gut reaction [00:22:41.643] to the whole concept of the Children's Classic. [00:22:44.120] Well, I don't think there's any key person to this tournament. [00:22:48.440] I think it's [00:22:50.720] the workings of [00:22:53.320] a lot of great people from [00:22:56.080] this area, and of course, [00:22:57.886] the university has helped tremendously [00:23:00.319] with their golf course and [00:23:02.560] people like the [?], and the [?], and [00:23:06.920] the [?]. [00:23:10.160] John, who started the whole thing about six years ago. [00:23:16.160] So its been the work of an awful lot of people, the volunteers. [00:23:20.600] And we're very appreciative of [00:23:23.720] what's happened in the past. [00:23:24.960] I think this is our sixth year. [00:23:26.480] - [Asa] That's correct. [00:23:27.800] And [00:23:31.160] we're getting more and more of the [00:23:33.371] celebrities. [00:23:35.040] Chet Atkins has always been here [00:23:36.520] but now, as you can see, we're getting Sam Snead. [00:23:44.480] Oh, Woody Woodberry. [00:23:48.200] There are so many people, and I'm sorry, I can't. [00:23:51.240] I was thinking about that last putt, so I can't think of any names. [00:23:54.160] - [Cynthia] There was a lot of pressure on that last hole. [00:23:56.880] Truly a lot of pressure. [00:24:02.140] Its been the works of, the honest work of [00:24:02.320] a couple of thousand people. [00:24:03.520] And I'm so very happy because [00:24:06.520] I've been part of it for the past six years. [00:24:10.600] But Perry, obviously there must be something about, [00:24:12.480] and you have just emoted your feelings, [00:24:15.286] but there must be something or some things that really just [00:24:18.160] turn you on to the extent that you [00:24:20.529] arrange your schedule every year [00:24:21.960] to be so intimately involved [00:24:23.791] in what's going on. [00:24:25.000] And I'm sure that's what our viewers are interested in knowing. [00:24:27.840] What is it that affects Perry Como [00:24:30.071] to the extent that he would want to be involved in this kind of event? [00:24:32.800] Well, in the first place [00:24:33.960] you're talking to someone who feels very much at home here [00:24:38.040] in Durham, because I've been coming down here for, [00:24:42.360] 40 years or so. [00:24:42.840] - [Cynthia] I remember as a child [00:24:44.586] coming here to hear you perform at [?] indoor stadium. [00:24:48.520] Many, many years ago. [00:24:48.800] Yes, because I worked with what was then Liggett Myers. [00:24:52.640] - [Asa] That's right. That's what I was going to say. [00:24:53.280] I remember as a kid, of course, that's going to date both of us, [00:24:57.400] but I remember as a kid that you were [00:24:57.757] sponsored by Chesterfield for many years. [00:24:58.840] That's right [00:24:59.600] and then we did our show from the Duke Chapel. [00:25:02.840] We used to do our Easter show down here [00:25:03.520] and we did a lot of shows in the auditorium. [00:25:06.280] So I feel like, [00:25:08.840] kind of a native of North Carolina, especially Durham. [00:25:15.880] The thing that's important is [00:25:18.280] is doing something for the youngsters. [00:25:20.271] - [Perry] I am not a very good one to— [00:25:23.960] I love to do it [00:25:25.160] don't misunderstand— [00:25:26.040] but I'm kind of chicken. [00:25:27.840] When I see kids that are [00:25:31.480] not physically in good shape. [00:25:33.920] I kind of break up a little. [00:25:36.720] But I'm thrilled to be here whatever I can do for them. [00:25:43.400] We had a bunch of them today [00:25:46.000] brought over and we talked, took some pictures. [00:25:49.880] But that kind of destroys me. [00:25:53.400] - [Asa] Well, you know we need more people who are chicken. [00:25:55.243] If that's that's what we call chicken [00:25:57.120] then I think that we ought to have more people who are chicken. [00:26:01.000] I'm no chicken when it comes to doing things, [00:26:01.480] but I'm just chicken to be around them. [00:26:04.081] I feel kind of sorry for them, [00:26:05.120] but we all have our little problems [00:26:08.214] and we think they're a big problems [00:26:09.799] but when we see some of these people, some of these youngsters— [00:26:11.171] [crosstalk] [00:26:12.643] - [Perry] God, we have no problems. [00:26:14.843] We had a bad shot and [?] end of the world is here. [00:26:18.320] You see you look around, [00:26:19.280] but [00:26:20.640] the tournament, getting back to it, is doing very well. [00:26:25.880] We're getting more and more people and we hope that— [00:26:30.800] - [Perry] I mean, they have people come out in this [00:26:32.343] kind of weather, it's pretty nice. [00:26:33.720] - [Asa] I was talking with Sam Katz earlier and we [00:26:35.600] were talking about financial goals and whatnot, [00:26:37.760] but seemed to run through [00:26:39.680] the comments that he made was not so much [00:26:41.771] the financial support that we receives each year it goes up, [00:26:46.000] but more importantly, the involvement of human beings. [00:26:48.440] Yes, yes. [00:26:49.586] The genuine interest that seems to come [00:26:52.520] as a result of being involved with this kind of activity. [00:26:55.320] And as you point out, [00:26:56.571] people were willing to come out on a day like today [00:26:58.520] with inclement weather and clouds about to open up over us [00:27:02.040] just to be involved with this kind of activity. [00:27:04.343] Not only to be with celebrities like yourself, [00:27:05.960] but just to be involved [00:27:07.643] and supportive of this kind of thing. [00:27:08.880] Well, it's a community thing [00:27:09.960] and I think something like this needs that. [00:27:16.040] The big [?] and things, [00:27:17.360] they kind of take care of themselves. [00:27:19.280] These are the things that I like to be part of because [00:27:25.080] these things don't take care of themselves. [00:27:27.920] But when you have people come out and [00:27:29.600] walk around 18 holes—and this course is not easy to walk. [00:27:34.200] - [Cynthia] And not easy to play either, especially [?]. [00:27:36.371] [laughs] [00:27:37.880] - [Perry] There are a lot of great holes. [00:27:40.014] And it's a little damp and a little wet. [00:27:45.120] It's fun, it's all in fun anyway. [00:27:46.251] Who cares? [00:27:47.480] - [Cynthia] Well, I'm quite sure many, many stars [00:27:49.440] will be added to your crown for such an event as this. [00:27:52.280] - [Perry] Well, [00:27:55.000] I don't like to ask friends of mine to come here. [00:28:00.440] But [00:28:01.680] they come here on their own. [00:28:03.160] I mean, a man like Chet Atkins, [00:28:04.560] he's been here as long as I've been coming. [00:28:06.953] - [Asa] Six years, about six yeras. [00:28:07.800] Of course I work with Chet and he's a very dear friend. [00:28:14.000] I see so many other people here. [00:28:15.720] Willie Mosconi has been here for four or five years. [00:28:21.000] And they're coming, [00:28:22.360] they know the reason they're coming, why they're coming. [00:28:27.000] And of course Duke has been [00:28:30.320] like home to me. [00:28:35.520] I come here and I stay with the [?]. [00:28:39.360] It's like a family. I enjoy it. [00:28:42.720] Oh, I'm quite sure Duke, along with the citizens of Durham, [00:28:45.120] are glad to have you as a part of their family. [00:28:48.200] Well, that feeling is kind of a mutual thing, as I say. [00:28:53.000] It's been going on a long time. [00:28:54.200] It's kind of a nice love affair. [00:28:57.080] - [Asa] I think this is a good place to end. [00:29:00.014] [?] [00:29:00.014] [applause] [00:29:38.120] I want to thank you for watching [00:29:39.900] and I ask you to join me next week. [00:29:41.520] Have a good night. [00:29:43.680] [music] [00:30:11.280] The preceding program has been produced [00:30:13.200] by Community Video Services of Durham Technical Institute.
