I'm not gonna do another one." 00:12:16:40 00:12:18:12 He was great fun. 00:12:18:32 00:12:20:32 I thought a marvelous actor. 00:12:20:32 00:12:25:83 - [Cynthia] You come from a generation of actors and actresses-- - [Joan] Five. 00:12:25:83 00:12:27:93 - [Cynthia] --mother, father, sisters, 00:12:27:93 00:12:30:35 - [Joan] Grandparents. - [Cynthia] Grandparents. 00:12:30:36 00:12:32:39 - [Joan] They go back to the Strolling Players, 00:12:32:40 00:12:35:60 which I thought--my husband said was in the 1700s; 00:12:35:80 00:12:38:00 I thought it was 1800s--in England. 00:12:38:20 00:12:40:80 They were all from England. 00:12:41:00 00:12:44:43 - [Cynthia] Do you remember growing up in the theater as a child? 00:12:44:43 00:12:46:51 - [Joan] Yes, and I didn't want to go on stage at all. 00:12:46:52 00:12:48:76 Oh, my father was dying for all of us-- 00:12:48:76 00:12:51:39 my sisters, my two sisters, and myself-- 00:12:51:40 00:12:56:16 and I finally did succumb because I had an infant child to support. 00:12:56:36 00:12:58:44 And he said, "Here's a way to support it." 00:12:58:64 00:13:00:96 And he had a play on Broadway. 00:13:01:16 00:13:03:28 And I went to New York. 00:13:03:28 00:13:05:12 First I asked, "What do I do with the baby? 00:13:05:21 00:13:06:56 I can't drag her to New York." 00:13:06:64 00:13:08:44 I mean, she was like two months old. 00:13:08:64 00:13:10:40 And he said, 00:13:10:60 00:13:12:52 "Leave the baby with the nurse. 00:13:12:72 00:13:14:20 And then if the play's a hit, 00:13:14:22 00:13:16:52 bring the baby and the nurse East," which I did. 00:13:16:52 00:13:17:52 And the play ran. 00:13:17:52 00:13:20:67 That was beginning of talking pictures--am I talking too fast? 00:13:20:67 00:13:21:51 - [Cynthia] No. 00:13:21:52 00:13:23:80 - [Joan] The beginning of talking pictures. 00:13:24:00 00:13:26:28 And everybody from Hollywood, 00:13:26:48 00:13:30:48 the producers and the scouts, as they call them, 00:13:30:48 00:13:34:59 were looking for Broadway actresses, ingenues, who could speak 00:13:34:59 00:13:35:41 and photograph 00:13:35:61 00:13:37:96 because a lot of the silent stars couldn't. 00:13:38:16 00:13:40:84 So from that play, I was supposed to go-- 00:13:40:85 00:13:43:80 I was supposed to go on the road with my father in the show, 00:13:43:80 00:13:45:52 but my mother was my legal guardian. 00:13:45:52 00:13:46:98 My mother and father were divorced, 00:13:46:99 00:13:49:92 and I'd already signed the contract with a small raise. 00:13:49:92 00:13:51:92 And what I was offered to go to Hollywood 00:13:52:12 00:13:54:92 was twice as much as they were paying me in the play. 00:13:54:92 00:13:56:72 And Mother just came back from Europe. 00:13:56:72 00:13:58:30 She hadn't signed my contract, 00:13:58:45 00:14:02:52 and she said, "I am her legal guardian and she can go to Hollywood." 00:14:02:52 00:14:03:83 So I went to Hollywood--in fact, 00:14:03:86 00:14:08:16 I was Ronald Coleman and his first talking picture, "Bulldog Drummond." 00:14:08:16 00:14:10:19 -[Cynthia] And what was your second picture? 00:14:10:20 00:14:11:41 - [Joan] Oh, heavens. 00:14:11:41 00:14:13:83 "Three Live Ghosts," I think, 00:14:13:83 00:14:16:75 and I can't think--Bob Montgomery was in that-- 00:14:16:75 00:14:17:75 and... 00:14:19:88 00:14:22:18 Not Dame May Whitty but somebody like that. 00:14:22:56 00:14:25:43 - [Cynthia] Share with me what a national tour is like. 00:14:25:43 00:14:29:51 You were with "Bell, Book and Candle," on a national tour for a long time. 00:14:29:92 00:14:33:80 "Climax," "Playhouse 90," - [Joan] "Playhouse 90" is a television thing 00:14:33:80 00:14:37:53 that we just did in Hollywood, I mean, we didn't go on the road with that. 00:14:37:53 00:14:39:91 - [Cynthia] Ok. Share your tour with us-- your national tour. 00:14:39:92 00:14:41:85 - [Joan] I enjoyed it very much, 00:14:41:85 00:14:43:00 and I went back. 00:14:43:00 00:14:44:84 Mother kept wanting me after I'd gone 00:14:44:84 00:14:47:64 into pictures, kept wanting me to do things on the stage. 00:14:47:76 00:14:50:80 And I went on tour also at a play called, 00:14:50:28 00:14:53:72 "Stage Door," because Maggie Sullivan, who had done it on Broadway, 00:14:53:72 00:14:55:75 was expecting a baby, and she couldn't do it. 00:14:55:76 00:14:59:24 So I took over the tour and went on that. I enjoyed it. 00:14:59:24 00:15:00:91 - [Cynthia] All right. Thank you. 00:15:00:92 00:15:04:20 Let's talk a little bit about your book. 00:15:04:40 00:15:08:50 - [Joan] Well, the book is, I don't think, in print any longer. 00:15:08:51 00:15:09:92 Everybody around here seems to think so, but-- 00:15:09:92 00:15:12:86 - [Cynthia] It's not? - [Joan] No, "The Bennett Playbill," 00:15:12:87 00:15:14:71 about five generations of actors? 00:15:14:72 00:15:16:92 No, I don't think it's in print anymore. 00:15:17:12 00:15:19:90 - [Cynthia] What brought you to write a book? 00:15:19:90 00:15:20:99 - [Joan] A friend of mine. 00:15:20:99 00:15:24:96 A mutual friend of my husband's and mine-- we didn't know each other then-- 00:15:24:96 00:15:26:68 said, "You ought to write a book, 00:15:26:68 00:15:28:31 you ought to write a book!" 00:15:28:32 00:15:30:56 Well, I could write a book 00:15:30:56 00:15:33:39 that had little things that would make it more interesting. 00:15:33:40 00:15:36:64 But I thought I would write about my family. 00:15:36:64 00:15:39:36 And I did it with Lois Kibbee, who did all the research. 00:15:39:36 00:15:41:59 I mean, she went back, went to the library, 00:15:41:60 00:15:46:80 went to all kinds of places to find out things that I didn't even know myself. 00:15:46:85 00:15:49:00 And that's how I happened to write the book. 00:15:49:00 00:15:53:30 - [Cynthia] All right, you just finished a film and-- 00:15:53:30 00:15:55:80 - [Joan] For TV. "Suddenly, Love." 00:15:55:81 00:15:58:76 - [Cynthia] Right. "Suddenly, Love." Tell us a little about "Suddenly, Love." 00:15:58:77 00:16:01:51 - [Joan] Well, it was lots of fun doing because Ross Hunter, 00:16:01:51 00:16:04:40 I've known for a long, long time. He was a producer. 00:16:04:41 00:16:06:86 And Cindy Williams-- David, is that the girl's name? 00:16:06:86 00:16:07:60 - [David] Yes. 00:16:07:60 00:16:10:95 - [Joan] Cindy Williams--I don't know the boy's name. And Lew Ayres, 00:16:10:96 00:16:13:92 who I did a picture with--about my fifth picture-- 00:16:14:12 00:16:16:44 with Lew Ayres, and he was playing my husband 00:16:16:44 00:16:18:55 and we hadn't seen each other in forever. 00:16:18:56 00:16:20:76 And he looked marvelous and he was very sweet. 00:16:20:76 00:16:22:11 And it was wonderful to see him. 00:16:22:12 00:16:24:00 And it was a great pleasure doing it. 00:16:24:01 00:16:26:87 - [Cynthia] Let's talk a little bit about your husband. 00:16:26:88 00:16:29:80 Does he travel with you often? - [Joan] Yes. Yes. 00:16:29:81 00:16:31:00 - [Cynthia] He does? And he enjoys it? 00:16:31:01 00:16:33:31 - [Joan] I don't know how much he enjoys it. 00:16:33:31 00:16:34:47 - [Cynthia] Right. 00:16:34:48 00:16:36:86 - [Joan] I think he's very sweet to come along. 00:16:37:67 00:16:40:85 - [Cynthia] Miss Bennett, I would like for you to explain to me 00:16:40:85 00:16:43:28 how an actress plays. 00:16:43:36 00:16:45:83 Do you pick someone in the audience to play to? 00:16:46:30 00:16:48:80 Do you pick a chair in the audience? 00:16:48:81 00:16:50:14 Or do you play directly at the lens? 00:16:50:14 00:16:52:16 - [Joan] On stage? - [Cynthia] On stage. 00:16:52:16 00:16:53:63 - [Joan] Well, on stage, there's no lens. 00:16:53:64 00:16:55:36 You know, it's just the audience. 00:16:55:36 00:16:57:39 And I think if you're doing a scene with somebody, 00:16:57:40 00:16:59:59 you play directly to that person. 00:16:59:60 00:17:01:80 But then if you have... You know, 00:17:02:00 00:17:05:80 you have in place lines that you don't have to directly speak to someone, 00:17:06:00 00:17:09:96 you sort of wander so that you're not in one spot all the time. 00:17:10:16 00:17:14:32 Unlike, unlike films, where they have what they call a "long shot," 00:17:14:52 00:17:20:00 where you are all over the set and then they come in on closeups of individual or 00:17:20:20 00:17:24:80 two shots or medium shots, and then you're with the person. 00:17:25:00 00:17:29:39 You know, at Ronald Coleman, the first film I ever did, when the camera was there, 00:17:29:40 00:17:32:50 I had a habit of doing this, talking to the person. 00:17:32:51 00:17:36:91 He said, "Don't do that! Do that! So the camera can see your face." 00:17:36:92 00:17:39:72 - [Cynthia] I want to thank you for having this interview with me today. 00:17:39:72 00:17:42:71 And I hope that your stay in Durham will be a pleasant one. 00:17:42:71 00:17:45:40 - [Joan] Thank you very much. - [Cynthia] Thank you. 00:17:48:92 00:17:50:32 There was a press conference held 00:17:50:52 00:17:53:96 for Miss Joan Bennett while she was in the Triangle area. 00:17:54:16 00:17:57:40 Reporter Ed Hodges for the Durham Morning Herald 00:17:57:24 00:18:01:46 questioned Miss Bennett about playing opposite Clark Gable 00:18:01:66 00:18:03:76 or playing the part of Scarlett. 00:18:03:96 00:18:07:68 Let's watch that response. 00:18:09:33 00:18:12:39 - [Joan] And David says they'd been hunting around for an unknown 00:18:12:39 00:18:14:43 and Vivien Leigh was unknown in this country. 00:18:14:44 00:18:18:84 I don't know how many tests David made, but it was Paulette Goddard and myself. 00:18:18:84 00:18:20:15 There was somebody else-- 00:18:20:16 00:18:23:72 I can't think who--and it was narrowed down. Paulette was eliminated. 00:18:23:83 00:18:25:48 And it was down to somebody else, 00:18:25:68 00:18:28:24 and they were eliminated in the meantime. 00:18:28:44 00:18:31:60 Vivien Leigh came over and her agent took her over. 00:18:31:80 00:18:37:36 She came up to see Larry Olivier, who was doing "Wuthering Heights," and 00:18:38:00 00:18:40:00 her agent, Myron Selznick-- 00:18:40:00 00:18:42:71 and his brother was David Selznick, who produced the picture-- 00:18:42:72 00:18:49:00 took her over and she wore a billowy gown and a large picture hat. 00:18:49:00 00:18:51:96 They started the film before they cast Scarlett because he'd waited. 00:18:52:20 00:18:54:28 He'd been testing and testing, and they said, 00:18:54:28 00:18:57:52 "We put so much money into this, we've got to start the picture." 00:18:57:72 00:19:00:16 So they started with the burning of Tara. 00:19:00:36 00:19:04:52 - [Ed] Atlanta. - [Joan] Was it Tara or Atlanta? 00:19:04:72 00:19:06:24 Was it Atlanta? 00:19:06:44 00:19:07:76 Well, anyway, 00:19:08:40 00:19:12:48 she went over and Myron introduced her to David, 00:19:12:68 00:19:16:68 and David took a test of her, and she got the part. 00:19:16:88 00:19:18:91 Otherwise, I would've. - [Ed] Did it-- 00:19:18:91 00:19:20:33 - [Joan] It didn't crush me. 00:19:20:33 00:19:22:63 - [Ed] It didn't really? - [Joan] It didn't crush me. 00:19:22:64 00:19:24:61 I'd work hard, and I made three tests. 00:19:24:61 00:19:27:23 - [Ed] You worked hard? - [Joan] Well, sure, it was a plum role. 00:19:27:24 00:19:32:12 - [Ed] Did you think it might go to you because her British accent? 00:19:32:32 00:19:35:40 - [Joan] No, because I had to study the Southern. 00:19:35:24 00:19:40:48 I studied for four weeks before I did the test with Will Price, 00:19:40:68 00:19:44:28 who was married to Maureen O'Hara, and he was Southern. 00:19:44:48 00:19:47:36 And we studied the three scenes that I did. 00:19:47:56 00:19:49:35 So I had the thing down. 00:19:49:35 00:19:52:32 - [Ed] Did you know Margaret Mitchell, or had you read the book? 00:19:52:32 00:19:54:25 - [Joan] No, no. I'd read the book, yes. 00:19:54:31 00:19:55:88 - [Ed] It was great. 00:19:55:88 00:19:59:24 This was about when? '38?
