If I'm anything, I'm just a vehicle. 00:02:42:32 00:02:45:44 - [Cynthia] I have so much I want to talk to you about. 00:02:45:59 00:02:48:40 So many things that you have accomplished in life. 00:02:48:24 00:02:50:52 So many struggles that you've had in life. 00:02:50:63 00:02:52:86 I want to talk about Yusuf--where he is now; 00:02:52:87 00:02:57:80 I want to talk about where Yusuf is going or where Yusuf would like to go. 00:02:57:28 00:02:59:48 All praises be to Allah. 00:02:59:68 00:03:03:80 I want to know: why did Yusuf choose Durham? 00:03:03:28 00:03:04:92 We have talked several times; 00:03:05:12 00:03:07:11 I know that you traveled all over 00:03:07:12 00:03:10:40 the United States, large cities, small cities. 00:03:10:40 00:03:11:60 You've met so many beautiful people; 00:03:11:80 00:03:14:24 you know so many great artists. 00:03:14:44 00:03:16:48 Why Durham, North Carolina, to live? 00:03:16:48 00:03:19:67 - [Yusuf] What a beautiful question. This experience has a whole lot of 00:03:19:67 00:03:22:35 spiritual impact because I didn't choose Durham; 00:03:22:36 00:03:25:96 Durham chose me. Because, er-- 00:03:26:16 00:03:28:60 in June--June the 16th-- 00:03:28:80 00:03:31:16 I mean, May the 16th, 1974-- 00:03:31:36 00:03:37:64 a Muslim, or a minister, who I introduced to Islam, by the name of Kenneth Mohammed, 00:03:37:64 00:03:40:88 he was getting a heck of a guitar player, you know, in the room. 00:03:40:88 00:03:42:86 He... 00:03:42:87 00:03:45:29 He was my first band leader, and I introduced him to Islam, 00:03:45:30 00:03:49:44 and then I went back out into the music world, and I had drug relapses and things like that. 00:03:49:44 00:03:52:99 But he used to always come through town and say, "I'm come getting you one day, wuss." 00:03:53:00 00:03:55:60 So it happened on the 16th of May, 00:03:55:60 00:03:58:88 of 1974, and he came and said-- 00:03:58:88 00:04:03:43 I was up there on one of the corners waiting to get high, you know --and he came up and said, 00:04:03:44 00:04:07:83 "Well, I come to get you." So I say, "Let's go get Brother Daud," because he was going through changes, too. 00:04:07:83 00:04:11:27 And so it's really above me since I didn't make any decision. 00:04:11:28 00:04:15:44 God just came to say, "Yusuf, I've got some work for you to do." 00:04:15:64 00:04:19:15 And so I came here; Brother Daud and I bought me an instrument-- 00:04:19:16 00:04:22:44 nice, healthy environment; Islamic community; activity-- 00:04:22:64 00:04:27:20 all those things complemented, you know, rehabilitation; we came down here cold turkey, 00:04:27:20 00:04:30:00 and here I am, wind up having a little, three year old daughter. 00:04:30:00 00:04:34:96 It's--I mean, I've got a three year old daughter now! And I had been childless for 47 years. 00:04:34:96 00:04:36:56 I'm 50 now. 00:04:36:76 00:04:40:44 So, I don't have anything to do with this, this love of God. 00:04:40:64 00:04:46:52 - [Cynthia] I want to talk about May 1974 to the present time. 00:04:47:80 00:04:50:20 Tell me in as short of words as possible-- 00:04:50:40 00:04:52:16 I know it's hard to do-- 00:04:52:36 00:04:54:68 I want to know about those years with Yusuf. 00:04:54:88 00:04:58:60 I want to know what Yusuf has accomplished. 00:04:58:80 00:05:02:76 How Yusuf feels about the years that he spent here in Durham. 00:05:02:91 00:05:04:52 Have they been happy years? 00:05:04:72 00:05:07:72 What are your most memorable moments here in this city? 00:05:07:72 00:05:11:76 - [Yusuf] Wow. So my sister, really, really the greatest things happened. 00:05:11:76 00:05:14:75 I see really what I'm doing now. I feel like I'm paying back. 00:05:14:76 00:05:16:52 I'm playing catch up, you know, 00:05:16:52 00:05:21:27 and the biggest thing that I feel like I've got to do is... Somebody asked me one time, 00:05:21:27 00:05:23:86 they said, "Brother Yusuf, after 30 years of heroin addiction, 00:05:23:86 00:05:26:67 what was the greatest lesson you learned?" I said, "Compassion." 00:05:26:68 00:05:30:47 And I didn't have anything to do with it. It just came through. Something that-- 00:05:30:48 00:05:34:84 compassion in the sense that I feel, now that my only job, as a vehicle of God, 00:05:35:40 00:05:41:40 is to try to bring about some human relations--that's all I'm about. 00:05:41:40 00:05:43:74 I want to be-- I'd like to be, for the rest of my life, 00:05:43:74 00:05:46:64 a sacrifice to make people get along. 00:05:46:82 00:05:50:00 That's all I feel. - [Cynthia] I want to talk about the Triangle area. 00:05:50:20 00:05:53:18 I want to talk about how Yusuf feels about the Triangle area. 00:05:53:18 00:05:54:47 I want to-- - [Yusuf] Love it. 00:05:54:48 00:05:57:84 - [Cynthia]--see the Triangle area's eyes through your eyes. 00:05:58:40 00:05:59:32 What do you see here? 00:05:59:52 00:06:03:36 Is the Triangle area as humanitarian as people say? 00:06:03:36 00:06:08:59 Is it artistic as they say it is? - [Yusuf] I've been around, sister. This is a very strange area, really. 00:06:08:60 00:06:11:24 It seems like it's destined to do something cultured. 00:06:11:24 00:06:14:60 I've been here for five years. I've watched cultural development, 00:06:14:60 00:06:17:43 you know, three great universities in the area. 00:06:17:44 00:06:19:83 I noticed when I first came to Durham, something said something to me 00:06:19:83 00:06:23:92 on the caption on the paper, "The city of industry and education." 00:06:24:40 00:06:26:59 And I remember that, and I've been watching how that 00:06:26:79 00:06:31:72 particular atmosphere has really been bringing people here from everywhere. 00:06:31:72 00:06:36:32 This is gonna be a--you're going to have enough immigrants here, pretty soon. Really. 00:06:36:52 00:06:40:28 - [Cynthia] I spoke with you back in the summer at the park. 00:06:40:48 00:06:44:48 We sat on the ground, and we just chatted for five or six minutes. 00:06:44:80 00:06:47:80 During that time, Yusuf said to me, 00:06:48:00 00:06:52:56 "I see changes here that I never thought would have come." - [Yusuf] That's right. 00:06:52:57 00:06:55:76 - [Cynthia] Let's talk about those changes that Yusuf sees here. - [Yusuf] Right, right. 00:06:55:76 00:06:58:61 I was in the United States Marine Corps in 1951 00:06:58:62 00:06:59:92 stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina. 00:06:59:92 00:07:01:84 I got to be optimistic because I've seen-- 00:07:02:40 00:07:04:60 I can bear witness--because of reference points. 00:07:04:60 00:07:09:00 1951: I was in the United States Marine Corps Band, Cherry Point, North Carolina, 00:07:09:20 00:07:11:47 walking in New Bern, North Carolina on pass. 00:07:11:67 00:07:14:39 Had to get off the pavements to walk in the gutter 00:07:14:39 00:07:17:80 with the United States dress blue Marine Corps uniform on 00:07:17:81 00:07:20:32 because one of my Caucasian sisters was coming up on the same side. 00:07:20:32 00:07:22:52 I've seen--I've seen lynchings. 00:07:22:52 00:07:25:79 I've seen--I've seen-- a whole bunch of things in my 50 years. 00:07:25:80 00:07:26:40 I've got to be optimistic. 00:07:26:53 00:07:28:27 And, for this part of the world, 00:07:28:28 00:07:32:40 people--in particular this-- I see more peace in this triangle area, 00:07:32:41 00:07:35:14 as overall--it's just people are getting-- movement I would not-- 00:07:35:14 00:07:37:72 when I first came here, you got people waving at you. 00:07:37:72 00:07:40:48 We come from a lost and hard part of world, and people waving at you, 00:07:40:48 00:07:43:12 everybody waving at you, and you would want to know who's behind us? 00:07:43:12 00:07:45:40 So that's the kind of human atmosphere that's here. 00:07:45:40 00:07:47:63 And it's a beautiful city. It's beautiful. 00:07:47:64 00:07:48:59 The atmosphere, 00:07:48:60 00:07:54:28 the temperature and the temperament is very human, and it's compatible-- it's beautiful. I love it. 00:07:54:72 00:07:59:36 - [Cynthia] I want to talk next about the Sallam, the cultural center. 00:08:00:20 00:08:02:92 I want to know how it got started. 00:08:03:12 00:08:07:96 I know that at this time of recession, everybody's feeling sort of slight. 00:08:08:11 00:08:10:96 I wanted to know where your struggles are with the Sallam, 00:08:11:16 00:08:13:24 and where does the Sallam's future lie? 00:08:14:86 00:08:16:98 - [Yusuf] See, the Sallam is very unique in that a brother-- 00:08:16:98 00:08:20:20 in capsule, a brother came in and said, "This is more than a restaurant. 00:08:20:20 00:08:22:75 This is a statement." And I got to go along with that because 00:08:22:76 00:08:26:84 what people are responding to there is a real human atmosphere. 00:08:26:84 00:08:29:76 Like I noticed when all the confusion started out and, you know, 00:08:29:76 00:08:32:39 everybody's worried about their actions and everything, 00:08:32:40 00:08:35:86 and the Greensboro thing, people would just come in there. 00:08:35:87 00:08:38:44 And the comments that they would make, the comments that they were making was, 00:08:38:44 00:08:43:28 "It just feels so peaceful in here," because you can be sitting next to him, and in cooperation, 00:08:43:31 00:08:47:16 we have three continents represented. As a human relations story, we have 00:08:47:16 00:08:51:47 Europe represented in my two Caucasian partner brothers, and we have Asia represented 00:08:51:48 00:08:53:92 in a little sister named Suman from Punjab, India. 00:08:53:92 00:08:56:44 You have Africa represented in myself. 00:08:56:44 00:09:00:64 So you have three continents getting along, so that--the place takes on that atmosphere. 00:09:00:64 00:09:03:61 You look around, look out there at lunch sometimes; it's like the United Nations. 00:09:03:61 00:09:07:30 I see Indian bother there, African brothers, Caucasian brothers and sisters-- 00:09:07:30 00:09:10:19 it makes them good, and it feels good. And that's what the Sallam is all about. 00:09:10:20 00:09:13:81 - [Cynthia] It does feel good. It does. - [Yusuf] I know it does. Because it was a labor of love. 00:09:13:82 00:09:16:72 What happened-- these two--I originally had-- 00:09:16:78 00:09:18:88 it was in partnership with little brother, 00:09:18:88 00:09:21:41 Muslim brother from the African-American community. 00:09:21:42 00:09:23:52 And we brought it as far as I feel we could. 00:09:23:52 00:09:26:64 And these--God sent these little Caucasian brothers to me one day and said, 00:09:26:64 00:09:29:41 they said, "Brother, we want to help you because we see what you're trying to do." 00:09:29:41 00:09:32:35 Now these brothers have opportunity to be anywhere else in the world-- 00:09:32:36 00:09:34:68 one's the steel mill inheritance; one is a-- 00:09:34:88 00:09:37:96 oh, you know. People are really--you know. 00:09:38:16 00:09:44:80 But human beings coming together because they feel a necessity to make a human example 00:09:44:28 00:09:47:72 not on their own desire, but being driven-- 00:09:47:92 00:09:50:52 if I had to accept all this, I would be egotistical. 00:09:50:52 00:09:53:19 I know I might've submitted to the fact that a vehicle system, 00:09:53:20 00:09:58:80 it frees me of ego and everything, and all praises due to God. 00:09:58:28 00:10:02:80 - [Cynthia] I know that the Sallam door has been opened always. 00:10:03:56 00:10:07:80 I know that the door at the Sallam never closes. 00:10:07:28 00:10:13:40 I know that there is always a smile and warmth and a hand at the Sallam. 00:10:13:24 00:10:19:40 I ran into several persons this summer and talking with those persons, 00:10:19:60 00:10:24:52 four young men who had come to Durham for the summer from Virginia, 00:10:24:72 00:10:27:96 and they said to me, "Do you know Yusuf Salim?" 00:10:28:16 00:10:30:32 And I said, "Of course I do." 00:10:30:52 00:10:34:12 "Well, he is the man responsible for us being here. 00:10:34:32 00:10:37:44 Brother Yu got us jobs; he got us a place to live. 00:10:37:44 00:10:39:40 And he's helping us with bookings." 00:10:39:24 00:10:42:80 I'm talking about Back Bay Jazz. 00:10:42:28 00:10:46:80 I later ran in to another group by the name of Triangle. 00:10:47:00 00:10:52:40 And they also had praises for Brother Yusuf. 00:10:52:24 00:10:55:36 Brother Yusuf, how many artists do you know? 00:10:55:56 00:10:59:80 How many people knock on your door for help? 00:11:00:00 00:11:02:91 - [Yusuf] Well, I don't even try to count them because-- 00:11:02:92 00:11:07:80 no, really--I don't have anything to do with it, really. If it comes to me-- 00:11:08:32 00:11:11:84 I'm telling you, really, people-- I'll be trying to express this, really. 00:11:12:40 00:11:15:92 I've submitted to the fact of being vehicular 00:11:15:92 00:11:19:16 in the sense of freeing myself from all those tensions and emotional things 00:11:19:36 00:11:23:16 and trying to figure this out. If somebody comes to me for help, 00:11:23:36 00:11:25:76 my basic human instinct is not even 00:11:25:83 00:11:28:80 to calculate, you know, that's the way I feel. 00:11:28:80 00:11:29:48 I feel good about, you know. 00:11:29:68 00:11:31:96 So any help that comes from me, 00:11:32:16 00:11:35:36 like I said, I'm a vehicle; I ain't thinking about it, you know. 00:11:35:56 00:11:36:88 So you evaluate that. 00:11:37:80 00:11:40:52 - [Cynthia] When I talk with those persons, 00:11:40:72 00:11:46:16 the thought that ran through my mind was, "Here is a man whose wisdom and knowledge 00:11:46:36 00:11:50:68 and love and peace is spreading through others." 00:11:50:88 00:11:55:32 Yusuf Salim will never die because-- - [Yusuf] Praise be to God. 00:11:55:52 00:11:58:56 - [Cynthia] he has spread himself among many. 00:11:58:76 00:12:01:70 I want to talk back now about some of the people, 00:12:01:70 00:12:06:40 like Sonny Terry and Bus Brown and the old blues guys 00:12:06:40 00:12:11:12 who used to stand downtown Durham and play-- Yusuf was very close to those men. 00:12:11:72 00:12:15:60 How did those men inspire you artistically? 00:12:15:60 00:12:18:81 - [Yusuf] Well, artistically, I grew up in Baltimore, 00:12:18:81 00:12:21:65 in a real soulful community atmosphere. 00:12:21:65 00:12:25:23 You know, where all the old timers used to get together and have a good time 00:12:25:24 00:12:28:41 it's called a good time house because we used to have a good time on the weekends. 00:12:28:41 00:12:31:36 Harlem would be jumping-- all the Harlems all over the world. 00:12:31:37 00:12:35:12 And it was just a beautiful atmosphere of warmth and concern for each other. 00:12:35:32 00:12:37:00 And mama used to run us upstairs-- 00:12:37:20 00:12:39:60 there was nine brothers and sisters-- 00:12:39:60 00:12:42:55 and something sounded good coming from downstairs, to me. 00:12:42:56 00:12:44:64 Old time musicians like Happy, a drummer, 00:12:44:64 00:12:46:92 and they call him "Happy" because he made you happy. 00:12:46:92 00:12:49:32 Old piano players, you know, just good old musicians. 00:12:49:52 00:12:51:80 When I got old enough to ask to speak to them, 00:12:52:00 00:12:54:20 I started asking them questions and buying books. 00:12:54:20 00:12:57:45 And this beautiful piano was in my mother's living room that she bought-- 00:12:57:45 00:13:00:72 in those times, it was traditional to have a good piano there-- 00:13:00:92 00:13:03:64 so those elements came together, 00:13:03:84 00:13:07:00 and the love--basically was a love affair. 00:13:07:20 00:13:08:76 And I just had to get involved in it. 00:13:08:96 00:13:11:92 And it was inspired as a process like that. 00:13:13:60 00:13:15:68 I just was exposed to it, sister, you know, 00:13:15:68 00:13:17:41 the blues thing is in everybody 00:13:17:42 00:13:21:75 who would come through the house on the weekend, everybody.
