[00:00:36.560] [no audio] [00:00:28.429] [applause] [00:00:34.360] And we know this to be true because [00:00:37.800] during these days with all this talk we hear [00:00:40.400] going around about his time for a change. [00:00:44.080] We know that North Carolinians are not [00:00:46.800] going to be short changed by electing a part-time, [00:00:50.080] first term congressional drop out as their governor. [00:00:53.600] [applause] [00:01:02.000] We began this campaign [00:01:04.680] last January the 10th. [00:01:07.280] In making that announcement at that time, [00:01:10.280] I said that the people of our state deserve, [00:01:13.720] desire, and expect strong, discerning leadership. [00:01:18.280] And I want to give such leadership and I want [00:01:20.960] to join hands with you and your family [00:01:24.080] in a partnership for progress. [00:01:26.480] And I also said on that icy winter day, [00:01:29.080] I don't want just to be governor, [00:01:33.080] I want to be one of North Carolina's best governors. [00:01:37.080] [applause] [00:01:44.960] Ladies and gentlemen, that is my pledge [00:01:47.800] to the people of North Carolina. To be the best [00:01:50.560] governor that I can possibly be for [00:01:53.240] all of our people of our great state. [00:01:56.160] North Carolinians do not want for their [00:01:58.720] governor, a man who pits people against people, [00:02:01.880] like my opponent has done in his campaign. [00:02:04.880] They don't want a governor who plays on emotions and fears. [00:02:08.880] Our people do not want a governor who plays section [00:02:11.920] against section, as my opponent has done. [00:02:15.040] The people of North Carolina are not buying Jim [00:02:17.600] Gardner's campaign. [00:02:18.960] And I think his actions during the past few days [00:02:22.520] have given us a clear indication that he knows [00:02:25.080] they are not buying it. [00:02:26.680] I want to quote what Jim Gardner has said, [00:02:29.920] and I remind you, these are his words and his [00:02:32.680] prophecy, not mine. [00:02:35.240] He said, "The man who gets involved [00:02:38.240] in mudslinging is the man who gets drowned." [00:02:41.480] He made that statement in Wilkesboro on April the 25th. [00:02:45.520] And what we are seeing in the twilight [00:02:48.040] hours of campaign '68 is a [00:02:50.720] desperate man sinking in the quicksand of his own mud. [00:02:54.800] He's drowning and he predicted it himself. [00:02:58.014] [applause] [00:03:09.400] When we win Tuesday, [00:03:12.160] it will not be because of me, [00:03:14.800] it will be because of people like you. [00:03:17.480] One thing that makes me so proud of our campaign [00:03:21.120] is that we have done it ourselves. [00:03:23.640] I asked you for your help and you responded enthusiastically. [00:03:28.680] We didn't have to go to Hollywood for help. [00:03:31.240] We didn't have to import finance directors from [00:03:33.920] out-of-state, advertising agencies from [00:03:36.520] Madison Avenue, or assemble a campaign [00:03:39.320] staff from half a dozen other states. [00:03:41.520] We have run a campaign for governor of North Carolina [00:03:44.720] and we have done it with North Carolinians [00:03:46.720] and I'm a immensely proud of it. [00:03:49.071] [applause] [00:03:59.200] You, and thousands of people like you [00:04:01.960] throughout our state, have been the real strength, [00:04:05.040] the real foundation of this campaign. [00:04:07.760] It has been you and people like you who have organized [00:04:10.840] precincts, who have attended rallies. [00:04:14.000] It has been you and people like you who have mailed out [00:04:16.640] letters and made phone calls. [00:04:18.120] That commitment and that dedication has been so important [00:04:21.480] in this campaign. [00:04:23.240] So will the same kind of dedication and commitment [00:04:26.200] be needed during my administration. [00:04:29.080] Just as I do not and will not [00:04:31.760] claim that Bob Scott won this election by himself, [00:04:35.800] neither will I claim that I alone [00:04:38.520] advanced North Carolina along the road of progress. [00:04:42.240] You and I working together will determine our state's [00:04:44.800] future and progress. [00:04:46.680] And I have said on many occasions, and [00:04:49.280] I believe it deeply, that the question [00:04:52.280] of our future is what is really at stake [00:04:55.080] in this election. [00:04:57.600] In what direction do we want to go? [00:05:00.240] What kind of state do we want? Not just in 1972, [00:05:03.520] but for the remainder of this century and beyond? [00:05:06.920] This is the -- North Carolinians [00:05:09.640] love their state and they don't think, [00:05:12.320] and I agree with them, that every problem ought to be swept under the rug. [00:05:16.400] Nor do they agree that we ought to always [00:05:19.080] talk about what's wrong without [00:05:21.640] providing some good and sound ideas about [00:05:24.360] how to eliminate the problems we have. [00:05:27.240] And thus it is that during this campaign, [00:05:30.400] stretching back over the long months, [00:05:32.960] I have gone about this state proposing [00:05:35.800] proudly and without apology [00:05:38.360] those programs which I earnestly believe [00:05:40.880] will enable North Carolina to go forward again. [00:05:44.600] Ladies and gentlemen, I love North Carolina. [00:05:49.040] My roots go deep. This state [00:05:52.920] and her people have been good to me and to my family [00:05:55.840] for generations. [00:05:57.680] And I want to repay that debt that I [00:06:00.200] owe by providing good [00:06:02.760] and strong leadership with the help [00:06:05.360] of you and all citizens of North Carolina. [00:06:08.360] I want to provide a leadership in which you have confidence. [00:06:12.200] I want to provide a leadership that you can depend upon. [00:06:15.880] But to do this, we must win the [00:06:18.440] election next Tuesday and we must win [00:06:21.120] it by such a margin that there will be no question [00:06:24.400] about the mandate that we have to keep [00:06:27.160] North Carolina on the road to progress. [00:06:30.120] [applause] [00:06:38.560] And let us leave this rally tonight, [00:06:41.560] proud of the fact that we are North Carolinians [00:06:44.400] and let it be known that we are willing to stand up and say so. [00:06:47.040] Let us renew our determination [00:06:50.200] to win and having won, [00:06:53.320] to keep working in a positive [00:06:55.960] direction, to build a better state [00:06:58.920] and to build a better life for us all. [00:07:01.800] My friends, my loyal supporters, [00:07:05.560] my fellow campaigners from all over North Carolina, [00:07:08.160] I am depending upon you. [00:07:11.929] [applause] [00:07:35.167] [music and clapping]
