[00:00:28.720] [music] [00:00:26.600] I feel a person, to prepare themselves [00:00:29.400] for the next ten, fifteen, to twenty years, [00:00:32.360] really needs to get as much education as possible. [00:00:36.360] For example, recently I heard that in the [00:00:38.880] next decade, in the nineteen nineties, [00:00:42.240] 500,000 jobs will be created in North Carolina. [00:00:46.920] It will require an average of thirteen point five years [00:00:51.240] of education to prepare for those jobs. [00:00:54.640] So the jobs coming online demand [00:00:57.280] a higher level of education. [00:01:00.800] The challenge is clear. In this high [00:01:03.400] tech world of global competition, [00:01:05.520] the key to long term success for individuals [00:01:08.720] and for companies is education. [00:01:12.000] But many companies are concerned about America's [00:01:14.640] ability to meet that challenge. [00:01:17.160] Our nation's recent performance is poor. [00:01:20.280] The fact here in Rockingham County is that we have [00:01:23.400] a fifty-five percent rate of persons [00:01:25.960] not being able to read or write [00:01:28.520] above a sixth grade level. [00:01:30.120] Those with less than high school education really [00:01:32.680] face a fairly bleak future. [00:01:36.600] Macfield wants its people to prosper in the 21st century. [00:01:41.000] That's why Macfield has made a commitment to education. [00:01:47.400] This means giving preschoolers a head start, [00:01:50.800] helping people earn the high school diploma they never had, [00:01:54.640] and supporting those who want advanced training. [00:01:57.920] We have a goal, which is for all of our [00:02:00.880] employees to have at least a high school education equivalent. [00:02:05.400] We would, we would certainly be very pleased [00:02:08.040] if we could accomplish that objective. [00:02:10.040] We know that the better educational background we have, [00:02:12.960] the better we will perform, the better we can [00:02:15.520] communicate with each other, [00:02:17.560] the more attention we'll pay to quality and productivity, [00:02:21.080] and the stronger our company will be. [00:02:24.529] [children speaking together] [00:02:34.120] Some of the most important educational experiences [00:02:36.760] take place early in life [00:02:38.680] and Macfield understands this. [00:02:40.920] Our first center for preschoolers is in Mayodan. [00:02:44.040] It's a place where parents can feel good about the care [00:02:46.800] and the education their children will get. [00:02:49.840] We like the idea of being able to provide [00:02:52.440] daycare for the children of our people, [00:02:56.600] but more importantly, we would like this to be a pre-school experience. [00:03:01.680] We would like through these centers to [00:03:05.160] give these children, you know, the hunger, the appetite, [00:03:08.280] the learning, teach them reading skills, [00:03:10.920] teach them basic math skills, [00:03:13.560] so that once they get into [00:03:16.160] a regular school program, [00:03:18.720] they'll be motivated to achieve at a higher level. [00:03:22.240] And this is what we intend to do in Reidsville, we intend to do it [00:03:25.720] in Archdale, we intend to do it [00:03:27.520] in any community where we have plants and people. [00:03:33.200] In addition to early childhood education, [00:03:35.800] Macfield has formed a partnership with Rockingham Community College [00:03:39.240] to make it easier for Macfield people, [00:03:41.480] at all levels, to further their education. [00:03:44.440] The concept now, which we are using [00:03:47.080] at Rockingham Community College, which is different than ten years ago, [00:03:50.520] is the fact that the individual comes in, [00:03:53.760] they let us know what types of objectives [00:03:56.320] that they would like to accomplish. [00:03:58.560] When you come into the class, you're not set up [00:04:01.360] in comparing yourself to someone else, [00:04:04.080] which is much different than traditional classroom settings. [00:04:08.200] There's been some questions about number seventeen. [00:04:10.440] There might be a couple of different ways to work this. [00:04:14.440] [?] You want to show us one way to do it? Well, this is the way I did it. [00:04:15.840] The community college offers a variety of courses [00:04:18.480] on campus, but Macfield considers one [00:04:21.280] course so important that it's been brought into the plants. [00:04:25.400] The classes for adults who want to earn their high school [00:04:28.120] equivalency diploma or GED. [00:04:31.040] Making education convenient and free [00:04:33.640] are two ways Macfield encourages its people to [00:04:36.320] pursue lifelong learning. [00:04:38.040] Teresa. [00:04:43.200] Would you like to go to the board and show us that one? I'll pass. Ok. [00:04:44.000] Adult education is what I prefer to call [00:04:46.520] the class here at Macfield. [00:04:48.840] I would like for them to come in for whatever reasons [00:04:51.080] they would like to come in. If they want to balance a checkbook, [00:04:54.160] if they want to read the newspaper, [00:04:55.960] if they want to learn to read their Bibles, [00:04:57.840] if they would like to teach Sunday school, whatever reason they [00:05:00.440] want to come in, I want to be here [00:05:02.960] to help them help themselves through learning. [00:05:05.640] This setting is much different than in a high school setting. [00:05:09.160] When people come in and tell me what they want to learn, [00:05:11.800] we concentrate on that. [00:05:13.160] If the goal is to get a high school equivalency degree, [00:05:16.400] we work towards that. [00:05:18.320] We don't have a structured class. [00:05:19.920] We work with each individual just with the one person. [00:05:24.260] Distance from here to here, here to [00:05:25.280] here, here to here and here to here. [00:05:26.880] Six times six is thirty-six. [00:05:30.560] [?] Not for the area. [00:05:31.571] [?] [00:05:35.760] Adult education sessions are informal. [00:05:38.600] People work at their own pace, [00:05:40.240] help one another, [00:05:41.600] and come and go as they need to. [00:05:44.080] Learning is an individual process and through learning, [00:05:47.800] each individual gains a unique sense of accomplishment. [00:05:51.400] That confidence is the foundation of future success. [00:05:55.920] The best way to get the feeling, of how good [00:05:58.880] it makes you feel, is to talk to the people [00:06:02.400] who have successfully completed these courses. [00:06:05.880] Find out why they did it, [00:06:08.640] how they did it, [00:06:11.040] and how they feel about having completed it. [00:06:14.800] It made me feel good [00:06:15.560] that Macfield would come to its people and say, [00:06:17.760] "We want you to finish your high school education." [00:06:20.520] And it made me feel good that they [00:06:23.120] care enough that they want their people to progress. [00:06:26.960] It just gave me the opportunity to be the person that I desired to be for so long. [00:06:31.240] Job wise, I feel like my GED will [00:06:33.960] help me be able to be qualified for more jobs. [00:06:37.240] I did have an experience at one time that I [00:06:41.120] put in for a job and I did not receive it, [00:06:43.640] not because I didn't have the seniority, [00:06:46.800] but I just didn't have the qualification education wise. [00:06:50.240] I thought it would be a lot harder, you know. [00:06:52.760] But you're with a lot of people that, you know, [00:06:58.360] that are sort of in the same situation that you were in, that didn't finish, [00:07:00.560] and they want to, you know. [00:07:01.720] Nobody's really that much smarter than anybody. [00:07:03.600] They don't try to make you look dumb or anything like that. [00:07:06.320] That's one of the things I like about it. [00:07:08.840] It makes me feel better about myself knowing that I'm going to better myself. [00:07:14.280] Satisfy my mind, get my diploma. [00:07:14.920] It's important to me. [00:07:18.440] Well, I want to go to the college and take courses. [00:07:21.240] So, I need that to go to the college. [00:07:24.371] I wanted to finish, but [00:07:27.360] didn't really take the time to go check it out, you know, [00:07:33.160] found out what it was all about until they gave it to us here at Macfield. [00:07:34.400] Then all we had to do was sign up for it. [00:07:37.871] It'll come to us. [00:07:40.440] I tell it very often that I got [00:07:43.080] my GED through Macfield. [00:07:45.120] My friends are very proud of me, [00:07:48.880] my church friends are very proud of me. [00:07:50.240] My church gave a special ceremony in my honor. [00:07:52.840] And I'm just proud. They're proud of me, [00:07:54.720] but they're not half as proud as I am. [00:07:56.280] [music]
