Description

The cemeteries of Happy Hill. Tax records show that a large lot near Willow Street, south and east of Baltimore Street, was bought in 1887 by Mary Palmer for Liberia Baptist Church. An undated tax map shows a large parcel portrayed in three sections with “Liberia Baptist Church” in the center and a graveyard on each side to the east and west. It was later divided into a larger graveyard portion and a smaller portion taken by the State Highway Commission in 1965 for Highway 52. The 200 graves that were in the Highway 52 right of way were all relocated to Nat Watkins Cemetery in Walkertown. The graveyards contains stones sunk between the present surface. Cemetery sign says Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church. Several photos are of the grave of Rev. Silas Higgins.
