Description
In 1955, a retired couple from Jamaica, New York purchased a home in the Kenwood subdivision outside Southern Pines – an “all-white neighborhood.” The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. White, stood their ground to the protests of neighbors, offering the house for sale at nearly double its value and promptly moving in when they received no offers. Their bravery made both local and national news. In the image outside the house, the man on the right of the couple was recording for WTVD-TV and NBC-TV.
