Description
Prohibition in 1920 made the production and sale
of liquor illegal. Bootleggers, mostly poor farmers, brewed
moonshine to make money -- a skill passed down from father to son in
some rural families in the Carolinas. Some moonshine runners
transported the illegal liquor in supercharged cars. Both federal
and state officials aggressively pursued the moonshiners. The
photograph shows Deputy Sheriff Leonard "Jug"Howard (right) with
apprehended moonshine.
