In 1940 the government began a project to benefit rural families. The surplus cotton of the South was released from storage and offered to low-income families, so they could make mattresses. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), the Extension Service, and the Surplus Commodity Administration (SCA), with the cooperation of county commissioners, developed the worktable plans, and the project was turned over to the Division of Extension Home Demonstration programs in each state. This collection of images features many members of these extension clubs, as well as the agents who organized events and work. Later in the collection, events related to local 4-H clubs are also included.
