Description

This photograph captures the Odell Henderson Owen (1905-1993) and Alma Cross Owen (1910-2002) farm, located along rural Route 3, taken approximately between 1947 and 1948. In the image, you can see the farmhouse (constructed around 1920), the barn (dating back to before the 20th century), various outbuildings, and the pasture land. Grading and preparations for Highway US 29/US 70 through this property began in the late 1940s. The small white posts in the foreground were placed by the state to mark the future highway's path. The home, barn, and other remaining structures are now located on Central Avenue in Lexington, Davidson County, NC. At the time this photo was taken, the farm had only one electric line (visible in the far left foreground), which provided power for a well that supplied running water to the house. The Owen children-Macks, Foy, Kenneth, Tommy, Glenn, Doug, Foster, Hazel, Kay, Faye, and Linda-all contributed to the farm's operations. Their main source of income came from cash crop grains and training horses, particularly the Tennessee Walking Horse.
