Description

The famous wreck of the Southern Railway's locomotive 97 which occurred just oustide of Danville, Virginia on September 27, 1903. The southbound mail express train left the tracks on a trestle and plunged into a ravine below. Nine people were killed and seven injured. The wreck inspired the world famous ballad, "The Wreck of Old 97."
