Description
Atlantic and Western Railway motor car #5. The car was built by the Edwards Company, Sanford, for the Atlantic & Western Railway Company with a Mack Truck Company front end and motor, and formerly operated between Sanford and Lillington. Photo donated by Mr. T. Gunter Wicker, 317 Oakwood Ave., Sanford, 1970, and copied and enlarged by Tysinger Studio. Atlantic and Western Railroad needed a way to cut costs on its passenger and express business between Sanford and Lillington in the year 1917. The first railbus that Mr. H. P. Edwards designed (in this picture) was made from a highway truck with a custom frame riding on flanged wheels with the addition of Westinghouse air brakes. This was the beginning of Edwards Railway Motor Car Company. Railbuses were sold to places like Bogota, South America; Black Star Coal Company, Louisville, Ky., and Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Chicago, Ill.
