Ledger for the Shepherd and Mangum General Store (or Ellison Goodloe Mangum's general store) with transactions dated from around 1859 to 1865. Customers include local farmers and businessmen. The general store was located at the intersection of what was then referred to as Hampton and Bahama Roads, near Bahama on the Little River. It served as a place where people could buy goods and discuss local news as well as a space for political meetings (for groups such as the Flat River Whigs), informal neighbor meetings, and polling. It in referred to by several different names including Mangum's Store; S. T. Mangum Store; Shepherd and Mangum, and Ellison G. Mangum and Company General Store. Ellison G. Mangum was the son of Chaney Mangum and, allegedly, Taylor Duke. Enslaver of at least 18 individuals according to the 1860 Census of Orange County Slave Schedule, he was the owner of Locust Grove Plantation, reportedly one of the largest producers of tobacco in the Flat Hill area. Transcription from cover: "Shepherd and Mangum. Durham, Orange County, NC. 1860."
