Description

This scrapbook contains information about Mrs. Laura Washington Hardy, the first Black public librarian in Lenoir County. Mrs. Hardy began work at the Kinston Public Library Colored Branch in 1938. Through Mrs. Hardy's dedication and work, the library outgrew its space and moved to the East Branch Library in 1961. A wife and mother, Mrs. Hardy remained an active member of the community until her death in 1968, one year after her retirement. This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, letters, and photos relating to Mrs. Hardy's life, work, and legacy, ranging from 1938-2024.
