Clifford Birkett, Jr. (left) is fingerprinted after his arrest by Sanford Police Chief, T. Paul Watson (right). The 15-year-old Birkett was arrested on charges of second-degree burglary of the home of J. R. Ingram in Sanford. The Rhode Island native had hitchhiked to Raleigh, where he had briefly worked in a bowling alley before traveling to Sanford. The story of this teenager garnered sympathy from both The Sanford Herald writers and the Sanford community, and when he next appeared in the newspaper, he had received many gifts of food and clothing from concerned citizens. Birkett was ultimately returned to his family in Rhode Island, and given a delayed sentence. This photo by Luman Moore for The Sanford Herald appeared in the February 25, 1953 edition of the Herald on page 1.
