Description
Annie Gordon Floyd was from Abanda, Alabama. She
started at Elon College in the 1915-1916 school year and is listed
in the Bulletin of Elon College as a student in the Special
Department of Expression. It appears she had to leave Elon on
February 14, 1916 due to the illness of her mother. She is not
listed in the 1916-1917 Bulletin of Elon College roster of students,
but she reappears in the 1917-1918 roster and is listed as a junior
in the 1918-1919 roster. Her sister, Mrs. Thyra Swint, was the
matron of the Young Men’s Club at Elon College, and the sisters
resided there together. This scrapbook contains photos of the
buildings on campus which include: the Old Main Administration
Building, West Dormitory, East Dormitory, the Power Plant, Alumni
Building (also known as North Dorm), Ladies’ Hall, and the Young
Men’s Club House. The scrapbook also includes photos of
African-American female servants, who were housed in the annex of
West Dormitory, as well as the first Japanese student on campus,
Toshio Sato. The three Literary Societies (Philologian, Clio, and
Psiphelian) appear several times, including in photos and programs
for each of their annual public entertainment nights. Other student
life photos and programs are represented in the scrapbook which
include: Freshman-Sophomore Debate, Pi Kappa Tau, Christian Endeavor
Society Cabinet, Student Volunteers For the Foreign Mission Field,
Y.W.C.A. Cabinet, Y.M.C.A. Cabinet, the Student Ministerial Band,
Home Economics, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s basketball,
men’s basketball, men’s track, the Glee-Clubbers, the College Band,
students in dormitories, the Program of Public Worship, and Dr.
Martyn Summerbell Lectures. Newspaper clippings that were collected
about the following individuals are included: Dr. William A. Harper,
President of Elon College from 1911-1931; Bessie Urquhart, Dean of
Women; James Oscar Atkinson, College Pastor; T.C. Amick, Professor
of Mathematics; and Rev. W.C. Wicker, Professor of Education. In
addition to information about Elon, invitations to commencement
exercises at the following institutions are included: Chambers High
School, The Richland High School, Birmingham College, Howard
College, Roanoke Normal College, The Birmingham Medical College, and
the University of Alabama. Annie Gordon Floyd contracted the Spanish
influenza when it spread across campus in 1918 and died at the Young
Men’s Club house in September of 1918 as a result. Although over 300
students contracted the flu, only a handful of students died. Elon
was the first college in North Carolina to begin school that year,
which meant that they were the first campus to have a breakout of
the flu. This led President Harper to remark, “We did not know what
it was, until we were all sick,” but it also meant that many nurses
were readily available to take care of students. Healthy students
also worked to take care of the sick in makeshift infirmaries across
campus. A sympathy letter to Annie’s mother after Annie’s death can
be found on page 59 of the scrapbook. It is unclear who finished the
scrapbook, though it seems that Annie began it as she is pictured
holding it in photos on page 18 of the scrapbook.
