Margarete Christine Corbitt Riddick Todd was
from Sunbury, North Carolina and attended Elon College from 1918 to
1922, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music. According to the 1922
Phi Psi Cli yearbook, her activities and achievements at Elon
included the following: Psiphelian Literary Society; Delta Upsilon
Kappa; Class Vice-President (1919); Marshal Freshman-Sophomore
Debate (1919); Glee Club (1919-20); Cantata (1919-1921); Class
Secretary (1920); Y.W.C.A. Cabinet (1921); Head Proctor (1921);
Certificate in Piano (1921); Treasurer Ophelia Dramatic Club (1921);
Ophelia Dramatic Play (1921); Y.W. Delegate to Guilford (1921);
Football Sponsor (1922); Social Editor of Phi Psi Cli (1922);
Undergraduate Representative Y.W.C.A. (1922); Draftswoman of Class
Will (1922); Music Lovers’ Club (1922); Diploma in Piano (1922); and
Lyceum Marshal (1922). All of Margarete’s siblings attended Elon
College (John E. Corbitt, Jr., Thomas Savage Corbitt, and Irene
Joyner Corbitt), as well as several other members of the family.
After graduating, Margarete returned to Sunbury, NC and taught music
there. Her scrapbook also includes documents from Elon’s 1971
Homecoming, which included a 50th anniversary celebration of the
1921 football team (for which Margarete was the team sponsor). She
passed away September 2, 1980. Her daughter, Mary Anne Cesario of
Santa Rosa, California graciously donated Margarete’s scrapbook to
the Belk Library Archives and Special Collections at Elon University
in 2011.
