Bahnson, son of Bishop George Frederick Bahnson of Salem, was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and came to Salem with his parents. He attended Salem Boys School and trained as a jeweler and optician. In 1865 he married Jane Amanda Johnson, the daughter of George Wesley Johnson of Farmington. Their home was built in the late 1870s. Bahnson practiced his profession in a small office near his home.
