Description

This giant steam shovel, known by construction workers as "Big Hundred," was used to dig the four-mile canal from Whitney to what is now Badin in Stanly County during early attempts at harnessing the Yadkin River. In this rare photo, circa 1907, the huge machine lies overturned after having run off its rails. A work crew posed for a photographer as they prepared to put it back on the track using timbers for leverage. The person leaning against the shovel marked "Daddy," is Davis H. Spears of Albemarle, who was employed as a water boy.
