Troubadours of Appalachian Elementary School parade.
Transcription: Property of Margaret Johnston of Boone, this photo comes to us through a member of her family who practically seized it from her grasp - if we understand correctly - so that we could look back upon a parade of the Troubadours of Appalachian Elementary School back around 1952. Identifications are left to right by row. First: Frank Payne Jr. and Tommy Owsley; second, Gary Mast at the far end, Bob Agle, Jr.; third, the man with the bass drum, Richard Agle, then Bob Cook and Bobby Joe Winkler; fourth, Tad Buckland and Jim Goodnight, saxophonists, and Margaret Rose Brown - behind whom their student teacher can be seen; fifth row, Pat Maddox and Libby Culbreth; and in the last row, far left, Gloria Hampton. The band is crossing the intersection of Howard and Depot streets. Behind them on South Depot i the old Boone City Hall, once a Ford agency. (The office in the left corner was occupied by former Mayor Wade E. Brown. The two centermost cars are a 30's Model-A and an early-50s Chevrolet.) We are grateful for the loan of this photo, which was made by Palmer Blair.
