Description

Photocopied photograph showing H.W. Horton sitting on horse in military garb. This was part of Boone's Centennial celebration in 1949.
Transcription: During Watauga County's centennial back in 1949, folks put on a pageant called ""Echoes of the Blue Ridge."" Men who failed to wear a beard to honor the county's beginnings in 1849 were rounded up and ""jailed"" briefly in a stockade in mid-town Boone. A parade was held, too, and children with playing cards stuck in the spokes of their bikes rode alongside the more historic entries, such as this horse and his sword-hefting rider, Walter Horton. The late Mr. Horton developed some rental cabins on land he owned on Winkler's Creek and welcomed seasonal visitors to the High Country for many a year. The photo was made by Palmer Blair.
