Description

Family tradition maintains that the house was built in 1840. Basil Gaither's grandfather, for whom he was named, settled in Davie County from Maryland as a land grant holder. Grandson Basil married Eleanor Sain in 1833, and expanded his land holdings significantly thereafter; in 1856, he owned 838 acres valued at $5,000.
