Description
In the early 1900s, Dais and Hodge Gaither wrote
to the Rosenwald Foundation for a grant to build a new school for
black students in Davie County. The Julius Rosenwald Fund, seeking
to improve opportunities and living conditions of African Americans
and people of Jewish heritage in America, contributed to the
construction of more than 5,000 rural schools for black children.
The foundation financed the new local school building using its
standard construction plan (Floor Plan No. 1).
